  • Orange instrument cluster in...now vechicle won't start.

I installed and orange cluster with the tach. on it. I rerouted the speedo cable to make it work with the cluster and got everything back together. Now my car won't start. I can't think of anything that I did which would be the reason for it not starting. I can hear the fuel pump working when I turn the key and the clutch pedal switch is good. Does anyone have any ideas? The one thing I did do was that I hit the starter with a pry bar and it sparked but that shouldn't really do anything. Is there something with these clusters that I should worry about?

glad to hear ya got the cluster installed! I would be willing to bet that when you hit the starter with that prybar it shorted out and blew out a fuse. Probably one of the fuses up under the hood in the little fusible link box. Might not be it, but thats what I'd check first anyway... good luck!
    No festiva for me ATM...

^^That would be a good place to start if you shorted the starter.

I think that is a good place to start also. Another thing I think it could be is that the car is always sitting outside in the cold and the battery is going but the lights work and are very bright still. Probably a blown fuse. I'll let you guys know very soon. Thanks for your thoughts!

I can't really find what is wrong. I looked at the fuses and they are good. What about the little box right now to the washer fluid reservoir? Is that a fuse box? Kinda looks like it. There was a connection on there that had a corroded connection. I'll try and put some pictures up if I can. [/img]

Check to make sure you didn't knock the small wire off of the starter solenoid,

That's the 1 we are speaking of. Those are the fuselinks if they get corroded clean them up. Usually just wiggling them will allow the car to start.

Ok that's what I thought just wanted to ask though. Well I tried to wiggle them and they just corroded and they broke off. Looks like I'll be taking it apart and putting some fusible links in there. What exactly do those fuses control? I can't read the box it's unreadable.

What are you using for fusible links? Cannot find a source anywhere around here. Anything can be used in place of the wires? 90Festiva-L/5sp manual/200Kmiles.

I'm not too worried about it. I don't work on the car all the time so when I get around to it I'll find out more. It's not that big of a deal since it is possible to fix even if they don't make the parts anymore or I can't find them. Just have to think outside of the box to make it work. When I find a way to do it I'll let you all know how I did it, if that's the problem. I'll report back soon.

Ok so I finally got the ole festiva up and running again. I replaced all the fusible links with in-line fuses and it works beautifully. I replaced all of the them since they broke off when I wiggled them. But that was not the problem. Plug wire on the distributor was not fully connected. Something so very simple that I thought I checked but obviously not. I took the new cluster out just to bring things back to normal so now I have to reinstall the new cluster again.

Anyways if anyone has had problems with there fusbile link box let me know. I can get a couple pictures of my set up and show how I did it. It's so easy, as long as you have a wiring diagram and have a little know-how with wiring. I used solder, shrink tube, and good connectors on all my work. Wiring is always a little time consuming so expect to for it to take a while.

BB, I'd love to see the way you did it. I am ready to replace my fusible links with fuses. I wonder if an Aspire fuse box would work?

Ha! I can just pull those at a junkyard, right?

Actually, I could practice installing them at the 'yard too!

                              Thanks Stefan!
