ashtray insert

F3BZ, when you remove the spring hinged flip thingy, how does the ashtray slide in and out of the dash? Does it stay put when your new insert is taken out?

I just throw change into my cleaned out ashtray.

How does the flip thingy come out, anyway? Do you just use a small punch to push out the hinge pin from one side or another?

However, sticking to your principles shouldn't cost you money!
I work in Washington, PA so I'll come by pick up that offensive "smoker delete" option from you! oh crud- that's too close to were i live for comfort. time to add another padlock. then again i'm sure u won't notice all those mudflaps while you're ransacking my house for the ashtray :lol:

safety guy- there is a little spring tab built into the insert that catches the tray so it doesn't fall out and when u want to remove it u depress that tab. as for taking out the snuffer flap i just found a big sewing needle and pushed the rod thru until i could pull it out with fingers but watch the spring don't go flyin-it'll put yer eye out.

I'm not a mud flap fan, I think with the lowered front end via FMS springs the front mud flaps would drag! However, now that you mention it, flaps on the back might be OK, as I still have the OEM springs on!

Besides which I'm just trying to help you keep your "principles"!
No need for you to suffer with a "smoker delete" option when I can do that for you! I said I would come by and pick it, as in a social visit! :wink:

Uh, just for the record padlocks are no real match for a plasma cutter!

i know it's Easter brave but bigger things are being Resurrected than this post from 2007. Holy Crap! i forgot i even had that. should be easy to get some china plastic factory to duplicate and some sign shop to make the metal tag. hmmmm.

I really like that insert. I checked JDM, Mazdaspeed, all the other key words and came up empty. But, I never quit searching.
I only find and read these old posts while doing searches.

well being a festiva fan/driver is pretty UNorthodox. best i remember, that tray was out of an early 90s' protege. not sure if it was a JDM piece but i got it off a site called ProDeJay. they might still be around but they carry mostly (very) interesting JDM stuff for hondas mostly. i made efforts to get a part# from my mazda dealer but he just shrugged.

here is a little oddity i picked up. it was advertised for the protege/familia but fits the festy tray perfectly. it's just a plastic coin tray that drops in after you remove the metal flap

Ya know....making this shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Lots of straight edges and uniform/concentric curves on the coin portion at the bottom right. I bet if we ordered a hundred of them, they could be made pretty cheap. As a total wag, I'd say $10-15 bucks a pop. Wouldn't do an injection mold. Way too expensive. Have a machine shop cut it right out of a block of plastic. Plastic is (obviously) much softer than metal (aluminum blocks) so the machining would be faster. Hardest part is programming all the dimensions into a CNC machine. I have a very good friend of mine who is a conceptual engineer.....you tell him what you want built and he draws it up until you say "it's right" and then he turns it over to a machine shop and they make it. He says machine shops always tell him "It doesn't cost much more to make a hundred than just one" because it's the setup fee that is the most work/hassle. Large CNC machines even have multiple tool heads that cut multiple cuts in parallel/series, giving you multiple products in the same amount of time as it takes to cut just one.

How many of you would be interested in helping pay the cost of my friend drawing this up on his computer software? Might be 4 hours of work at about $60/hr to produce the drawings? Guess I'd better shoot him a copy of this picture and ask him what he'd actually charge to draw it up.
