  • Headliner?? updated, cant get the vinyl one in

Where there different types of headliners? My old one was a molded cardboard backed kinda deal and it was easy to work with, but it was dirty. Today at the yard i tried to pull a clean one but it was like just stretched vinyl. It didnt seem to have any backing. Is it possible to remove this type without destroying it? Cause its still nice and clean, id love to have it for my car.

Earlier festiva's (88-89) had the vinyl headliners while the later models with auto-belts had the standard headliner.
It's a good thing you don't read the stickies, you might of learned something.Poverty produces creativity

Hummm... that makes some sense. The car i was pulling stuff out of was a 91, but in canada all years came with the manual belts, so maybe all our cars will have the vinyl headliner? Any CDNS with later model festivas wanna confirm? My car is out of the US and it had auto belts originally.

How do you remove the vinyl ones? I want to get it out of the car in decent shape. It seemed so fragile.

Yup, I got the crap vinyl in my 92, along with the regular seatbelts. Although, my registration reads that I have automatic belts for some reason.

Stefan, if you didn't get it out, I've removed one before, and so has Mattswabb.

First, remove all trim from around the whole interior where it contacts the headliner: pillar trim panels, rubber seals, etc.

Second, remove the dome light and look for the three to five flex rods which go from one side of the car to the other. Remove these rods by flexing them so they come out of their spots on each side.

That's about as good as I can describe it. Go slow and you should see how it's done.

If it's an LX, get all the pillar trim panels so you can install the old style liner in your car. You might have to make some changes as well to "fill in the gaps."

          Good luck!

thanks for the help, im going tomorrow.

whats this about the pillar trim panels? where they diffrent between the L and LX models? I thought the LX interior only had diffrent seats and door panels

i think the LX,GL had a trim piece on the C-pillar (to the left and right of the hatch glass) but i don't know if its glued on or held on with the headliner, rear window latches and speaker shelves somehow.

well i got it out in one piece.

But i cant get it in right

even with all the sides clipped in it sags where the rods are

do i have the rods in the right holes? i put them in the big oval holes because those were the ones that seemed to line up.

I don't think they go in any holes. It goes right above the holes in the slot.

Yeah, I seem to recall slots, not holes. The slots should be up higher.
