  • Cupholders: A Tutorial, PICTURE LINKS FIXED!

    Hey guys. Alright, it's not really a tutorial so much as a pictorial, but you get the idea. I took the camera to the garage for my final fitting and mockup of the center console/cupholder thing.

    The center console is from an automatic Festiva. The cupholders are from a Protege. The shifter boot is from a 323.

    All work was peformed utilizing a Dremel, and patience. All parts are filthy. (No parts were cleaned during the making of this pictorial. That just wouldn't be me.)

      very nice. do you know how long that strut is? (or what car its from) I printed off a coupple of pics of your setup so i can ty find the parts in the yard today 8)

        I bought a few struts and just test fitted them. I really wish the first ones I had purchased would have worked, but they were a teeny bit short. They would've looked cooler.

            Oops, my bad. I shut down my Picasa account in favour of Photobucket and didn't transfer any of the pics. I'll fix that when I get home later.

                      I would, but I don't have the use of a garage anymore. My friend got shut down by out local bylaw officials recently, and we (my friends and I) are "homeless" so to speak.

                      If I do find somewhere to work, I would be happy to help you out. Although I think you could pull this one off yourself. It not so much difficult as time consuming.

                        Sooooo... If I read right, the boot was from a mazda protege? Did you have to mod it much to fit?

                          The modifications for the whole thing, including the boot, pretty much involved grinding off almost all of the mounting tabs and making new ones out of bits of scrap metal and plastic. The boot is held in mostly by a plastic epoxy type of thing. The trickiest part was cutting down the front surround piece and rejoining it in as stock looking a manner as possible. A lot of material had to be removed from just behind that part to clear the hinges on the cupholder door.

                          If I had to do it again, I'd follow pretty much the same path, but I might go for those Taurus cupholders. The appear to extend out a little farther. The way mine are now, if I have a bottle of Coke in the left cupholder it changes the radio station when I hit a bump.

                          With the Taurus cupholders, like the ones shown below, you could cut them in from the back of the bin insert, leaving the fascia intact. You'd just need to fab a couple of tiny brackets to hold them in place.
