  • Paint brand question

I am going to spray color next weekend on my car. I planned on using PPG or Dupont products. Then I got the sticker shock. The base color, clear and all other stuff for the final spray is $500-$600.

Anyone have any experience using a less expensive paint such as Sherwin Williams dimension line, Martin Senour, or Dupont Nason? Any other suggestions?

This is my 1st paint job and everyone I know that paints uses only the best. If it was a very expensive car I wouldn't mind spending that much but I still have to remember that it is a Festiva.

Looks good, a budy of mine has an xr4ti.
Do you remember what sherwin williams line it was? I was looking at the dimension line. How did yours cover? Base coat clear? How many coats did it take to cover?

      thanks

        Not sure of the series.

Red was three coats total, blue was two, white was three and there are 6 clear topcoats.

All prep and paint was done in a small hobby shop over the course of two days. After scotchbriting and spraying the white, we used infrared lamps to cure it out rapidly, by lunch it was time to tape, the blue went on easily, the red panels were off the car when sprayed.

I have a bunch of odd lot Finishmaster overruns from a buddy who is a painter at a body shop, nothing more than a quart at a time but a quart can go a long way if cut right!

i love merkurs. especially their motors. they make great motors for pintos, mustangs, and rangers. o and rx7s my friend did that but sold it before it was running but the motor was mounted in the car.

              Paint costs

Automotive paint is one area that's really taken a turn for the worse in terms of DIY affordability using premium products.

Dupont, PPG, Sherwin Williams, all should offer a lower end, matched system.

The Nason, we used to paint our fleet trucks with it. Single color system, applies straight over existing finish that was prepped. An economical approach is at least 2 medium coats for full coverage ( 3 minimum for reds, yellows, whites ) followed by an integral-clear coat for the final pass.

Maaco quality, no surprise, this is what they use ( or used ).
