  • Roll cage modification questions

So I picked up my rollcage from Ian (Project B6T) on sunday. He had to cut all the cross bars (5 cuts total) to get it out of the car in mostly one piece. Does anyone think I am going to have any issues splicing these cuts with one size bigger tubing and having them double welded? I would think this would be at least just as strong as the original bar if not stronger at the splice due to the double tube.

Basically the cage was split in half down the middle if you can picture it. I was thinking about turning it into a bolt in cage, but where it mounts to the struts towers needs to be welded on I guess.

I think if you do it the way you want to you will not have any problems.......The big issue is getting someone with good welding skills......I use a guy who has been welding for a living for 40+ years.......It's worth a little more money to get the job done right...the first time....and seeing as this is a roll cage......you REALLY want to do this right the first time....you won't really get a second....

you could just bevel them weld them and grind the welds down flush with the pipe, then paint it. Arent welds supposed to be stronger than the metal itself?

Sleeper- I know of a guy that has been building rollcages and cars for the local dirt track races for years. So I trust his welds

niklid05- That is what I thought too. But I will have to check on that.

Couldn't you weld a "mount" onto the strut towers and then have that portion of the cage that goes there bolt in? I've heard from the Jeep world that bolt in cages really aren't the way to go, but it's my guess that you never PLAN to roll your car where you'll actually need to use the cage...

Any pics? Is it a full cage that runs up front too? or just bars in the back?

I dont think bolting a main part of the cage is nhra legal. I could be wrong though. The only thing that can be bolted is the swing outs at the doors.

I have seen alot of pictures of NHRA certified cages that are full bolt in. Yes this is a 6 point cage, so it runs up front across the dash, with mounts on the floor in front of the doors, behind the seats, and on the struts towers.

Put smallet bars inside and weld around them instead of a bigger one on the outside.

Will that be stronger? I can see how I could grind the weld down afterwords and make it look clean after being painted though, that way.

^^I know a guy that repaired a race car that way after it hit a wall and he had to weld on a new front frame section. He guaranteed it would be stronger! It has held up to some 10 sec passes so far!! Along with some intense street driving.
