  • 85% tint

I've been driving this car for a year and a half and passed many cops and even been pulled over for cutting thru a parking lot and never had a problem. Well today got a ticket. I found out that I have 85% tint on my windows. They actually carry a meter for this. The officer told me if I get it within spec they usually drop the fine and I'll only pay the court costs. I always knew they were dark. She said Ohio limit is 50%. So I'll have to remove the tint and step it down a bit.

I guess I've been pushing my luck with the dark tint.

85% tint = clear... The lower the number, the darker the tint... I believe the clear glass on my Festiva ran at 80% when our cop friend in town used his meter on my car...

To me, that looks like 15%... The percentage goes by how much light goes through the tint... 50% is still fairly dark... If I were you, I'd go like 35% in the rear and 50 up front...

      Matt,

Think the back ones can stay the same.
But the driver and passenger windows have to conform.
Not sure about the back windshield!
I need to find the ordinance on this myself!
Let you know what I find.

FWIW... In PA, the rules are for ALL windows, unless the car comes from the factory with tint (which never includes the front windows anyways)....

I ran 15% forever with minimal problems... If a cop pulls you over for tint on your Festiva, he musn't have much to do...

I guess I had it backwards. She did say that 85% of the light was blocked.

My car has 35% tint, just a shade above legal. Did you get stopped locally? If not leave it alone!

Brunswick. I went to the cruise in and the cop was out on rt42 waiting for anyone to make a mistake.

I'll just throw in some spare windows and get the fine droped.

Brunswick cops are out to write tickets! A friend of mine got a ticket for reving his engine there one time. The car was loading up and all he did was clear it out.

It is too bad all the States are not more consistant on tint laws .

Too much variation in it .

Illinois is strict , but you can tint as dark as you want on the windows , as long as you leave the front 2 side glasses alone, and you can tint the top 6" of the windshield .

I put 5% on mine , I like the way yours looks Matt.

Here's Ohio Revised Code on vehicle tint, but it gives no percentages:

Here's the BMV site, but it again gives no clue other than this:

Glass/Window Tinting: Application of vehicle glass darkening material must meet Director of Public Safety specifications. Reflectorized material prohibited.

I was unable to find "Director of Public Safety specifications." Hmmph.

So here's a commercial site with specs:

They make it very clear, but you might call the BMV to confirm the numbers.

in canada you can paint the rear 3 windows if you wanted, obviously you wouldn't paint them though, and they say somewhere around 15% is the limit on the front 2, a friend of mine has 5% all the way around on his car and you can't see in, even in daylight, but he has gotten pulled over yet

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

i've got 20% on my rear 3 and i wouldn't want it any lighter.. around here leagle is 35% and ligheter but so far no1 has said anything, it helps if you don't have the front two tinted they don't think about the rears as much.

In New Jersey window tint is not allowed on the front windows nor the windshield. (factory tint is allowed I believe) You may have tint on the back windows as dark as you want. Also if you tint your back windows you are required to have 2 mirrors! So I guess that would mess up quite a few festy owners. You are also not allowed to use reflective or mirrored tint anywhere on your car. I was told front windows cannot be tinted for police safety. When they pull you over they can see what you are doing. My dad used to have his truck inspected in PA and he would just put his front windows down and they would not notice. This stop working the second he got a NJ inspection.
