  • Painting alloy wheels

There are a lot of threads about painting the steel wheels, but what about painting the alloy wheels? I have an idea that I got from my rx7 wheels to paint the indented portions of the wheels. Heres the idea done in photoshop.

What do you guys think of this and do you have any tips on cleaning the caked on brake dust and types of paint to use.

An SOS pad will get pretty much all of the brake dust off. As for paint, Tremclad/Rustoleum (Which are both the same brands, just different names) works best since you can get a whole array of paints like High heat, rust paint, plastic, etc. etc.

I took a few hours today and did it. I found some of this acidic wheel cleaner at autozone and it cleaned most of the brake dust off. Heres the final result, without the hubcaps on (i still need to paint those).

          Eagle One Etching Mag Cleaner

They had it on sale for 2/$7.00, I chose it because it had the most warnings on the back.. seemed like a good idea.

Is the rattle can comperable to powder coat? (I know powder always takes the cake over spray) But does it look good and not tacky . . . can you tell its been done with a rattle can?

I dont think it looks tacky at all, looks clean and professional. I usually cant tell the difference between a good spray and powdercoat. powercoat may not chip as easy but I would find it to be a hard task to chip the insides of the wheels.

It looks good. It adds some depth to the wheels.
