  • aspire brake swap (front)

Start by putting your car on stands, make sure it is safe

These are the front struts I know, I know they are used but I will get new ones when the swap is done. Anyhow left strut is festiva right strut is Aspire they appear to be the same.

Oh ya measured ride height 23" before lift.

This is how I took off the axle nuts
It was fairly easy, dont forget to spray all nuts and brake lines with Nut Buster or some kind of penetrating fluid.

Remove knuckle and strut, also remove outer tie rod end count the turns when removing and install the new Aspire or Escort tie rods with the same amount of turns the old one came off with.
Here is the diffrence from Festiva to Aspire or Escort.
Left one is Aspire and has larger taper than right Festiva.

This is a good time to replace your sway bar because your lower ball joints will hang loose and make it easier to install sway bar.
Place jack under front cross member undo 2 front bolts and lower front of cross member. Drain radiator and cut 1-1.5 inches off the rad where the lower rad hose fits and cut the same amount off the lower rad hose.
This will allow more clearence for the sway bar it may touch your front trans mount but won't hurt nothing.
This is a pic of both sway bars the topone is from an Aspire it is 1" thick the Festiva one is 3/4" thick and are both the same width.
Now is the time to install your knuckle and strut make sure you check or change your bearings.
Now install your calipers and new brakes with hardware
If you put in studs lock tite them in
I dont think anyone mentioned anything about this but when you get your brake swap from your Aspire or Escort dont forget to keep the caliper bolts when I did mine someone took the axles and the calipers were hanging well Aspire calipers have a longer caliper bolt on the top than the Festiva so I had to order caliper bolts not too bad for me cause I work at a dealership and pay cost plus 10%.

There you have it now do the other side. [B]Don't forget to recheck all your bolts and install cotter pins,[B] this may save you alot of grief in the end.
Front ride height after swap 24 1/2".
Will do write up on rear swap when complete hope this helps someone.

              Looks good!

I would like to mention that a most festiva/aspire/escort outer rod ends are not the exact same length (different brands for the same car are often different by 1/8" or so as well), so counting turns is probobly not going to cut it for most situations. I would recommend either aligning the car yourself or taking it to a shop when your done!

Other than that everything looks good, you'll love the swap, especially the front bar! Good to see more people doing that as part of the swap.

Yes an alignment is a must counting threads just gets you in the ballpark so you can drive to the shop to get it done.

I just did mine...not bad, but I did have trouble getting the driver's side end into the arm. I had to clamp the swaybar holder together than tighten it up with the two bolts...it was a tighty I tell ya! Anyways, I think I forgot to cut the rad a little off even tho I did cut the hose. I guess I will have to take her on the freeway and see how this feels. By the way...I measured the darn think and its Festi 22mm and Aspire 28mm! Thats a big difference! (25mm=1inch)

yes, it felt way better while driving on the freeway...I liked it!! Hey, did you see if the Aspire radiator is different build that would acomodate the swaybar in the Festi ??? I was thinking about looking at it and see if that would make any difference? After all, I am happy. Now as soon as my new shoes and pads show up along with the cross drilled rotors I will be dropping in the Aspire brakes in like you did. Thnx for a great write up man

good idea to know that the Aspire rotors for an automatic transmission have seven holes while the manual transmission ones only six.

Why? dunno, but the width of the rotors is different though they use the same size brake pads. If you look at my posts I did one to a recent thread where this is discussed eloquently which is better than me trying to refresh and repeat here, eh?

Thinking out loud: When I switched to the FMS "lowering/racing" springs I did the rear axle first and drove about ten thousand miles before putting the front end springs from FMS on the car. I think I prefered the stock Festiva springs on the front while driving "outback" style roads in Humboldt county; since the ride height is not so low and they are not nearly as stiff so the bumps haven't the same impact even though all my teeth are still my own.(sorta kinda)

That said I thought great fun driving a buckboard like '66 VW type III in the Okanogan*; which I'd put Monroe-Matic coil-over rear shocks on the back of, which since designed for the type II(the bus or transporter) only were anything but like a hard-tail when heavily loaded.

*The largest county in Washington state and also the least people-named for the Okanogan River there; whose basin also continues far north of the border in the B. C. province of Canada and which there is quite populous and their southern California since the climate changes from nearly Arctic below the 49th parallel to quite temperate-for our wooly neighbor to the north.("balmy")
