  • MINI Cooper Wheels

Hello all. It has been a very long time since I last posted here but last time I did i was so nicely welcomed that i figure i should give back.Granted I am still a newbie here but it think I can help a fellow festy owner. When I first came here I was hoping that someone had already posted a how to and what to expect when puttin mini cooper wheels on. I didnt find anything but you all took the time and gave good advise. So enough blabering and to the swap.........
Step 1 Aspire swap- this is needed for the 4x100 bolt pattern. Its not hard to do and i lucked out the day i went to the junk yard it was a 1/2 off weakend. I walked out with newish looking pads, rotors, stock aspire knuckles, tie rod ends, calipers, brake lines, rear axle, and aspire master cylinder all for around $160. I installed new bearings (press required for fronts), seals, wheel cylinders, shoes, and brake hardware. I recomend installing aspire master clyinder due to correct piston bore and its easy just bend the top line very slowly with a tubing bender to make fit. Bleed and flush system. Make sure pedal is hard!!!! note stud and nut conversion is not required Stock lug bolts fit and work just fine.

Step 2 Remove old mini tires- if not alread done and mount and balance 195/45r15 tires. I Bought mine off ebay. I have done research and found that it is not recommended for 195/45's to be mounted to 5.5 inch rim but it fits (PITA). I chose this size because it was cheeper and is only .7% smaller than stock so fairly accurate speedo.

Step 3 Roll rear fenders- This may not be nessicary or it may be more nessicary with FMS lowering spring. Mine onn stock blown junk springs and shocks will touch the fender over large bumps but im going to roll the fenders and go from there.

Step 4 keep them clean- "They might be 15's but I keep them clean." Mine are not clean at the moment but I try as it is a slight head turner. I get thumbs up sometimes but laught at other times. Hey its a festy but its mine and i wouldnt have it any other way. You can turn lock to lock with no problems. Aspire upgrade stiffens the rear and helps with understeer. The aspire brakes are awsome I havent tested the limits but I almost go through the windshield if I stand on the brake. The wheels and tires are pretty light weight 15.2 lbs for 15" is light, and make road feel so much better. Next up is FMS lowering spring and KYB struts unless someone knows of a better set up.

"Rolling fenders" involves having a buddy and a baseball bat! If you look in your fender wells you will see a lip where the fender was stamped from factory. This sticks out ~1/4 in and contacts my tire if I go over a large bump or have 4 people in her.
Step 1- place base ball bat on top of the tire and push down so it contacts the inside of the fender.
Step 2- have buddy SLOWLY ease the festy forward and you will see that the bat will "roll" the fender out. Repeat until lip is flush or if you realy want until the fender pokes out a little. Same idea as an english wheel to a flat metal surface slowly walk the fender out until desierd clearance.

^ remember to heat the fender lip so as to NOT crack the paint.

Is a smaller width or a larger width recommended?

I was at the Toyo Tires site and yes the recommended rim range for their 195/45/15 TR1 is 6" to 7.5" Their 195/50 series uses a rim range of 5.5" to 7.5" But I think those 45's look and will be fine>

I have a set of the Miata "daisey" rims that are simular to your Mini's, just in 14's though. They are sized at 14" x 5.5" and are fitted with Toyo's 195/45/14 TR1. Even though the recommended minimum rim size is 6", they fit, look and handle perfect.

I wish I had come across your post first as I prefer the the bigger/wheel look that your rims provide. I like the look/design of the Miata daisey rims and in my opinion they look as if they were ment to be on the Festiva. The bonus part of it also, they can be had for cheap(got mine@ $50.00 a set of 4 w/ 185/60's) My tires are brand new, so can't justify buying another set as of yet. But, I will definitely keep my eyes open for a set of those R82's!

yeah i lucked out i made out with the rims for free!! Yeah i have been rockin this wheel tire for about three months and have made 2 trips from VB to PA (whitetail and liberty, I like snowboarding) and have had no problems at all. I bought the stud and lug conversion kit anticipating the need for spacers but they require no spacers. I actually wanted Maita wheels but could never find them in the JY and i stumbled across the mini's. Funny how that works I really want to do the suspension next but I cant decide on kybs with civic coilovers (I think i read someone on here had done this) or just go FMS Lowering sprigs. I like a more firm ride that comfort as there are lots of back roads like 5 miles from my house.
