  • offset vs backspace

I've done a ton of research, I'm now more confused than at the start.

What does 114.3X4 +38mm translate into imperial?

    4.5X4 "what backspace?"...

Backspace is a term being used less and less. Seems to just linger in the Chevy till I die but run with a 9" Ford rear end crowd :x.

I think backspace is how much rim is sticking in towards the center of the car after it's mounted. Offset can be measured on any wheel mounted or not. You can have the same offset on a wheel but the backspace can be different if the same wheel is mounted on two different cars in other words. Please correct me if thats wrong, all I have always gone for is "does it look good" and "please don't rub or hit my brakes" LoL. Ive messed up before and taken a loss, I know
    Here's one link I found:

Backspace is the distance measured from the back side (hub mount) to all the way to the inner rim lip edge.

Offset is the distance for the middle of the wheel to the mounting hub surface.

      4 x 3.93/4.00 = 4 x 100
      4 x 4.25 = 4 x 108
      4 x 4.50 = 4 x 114.3

      5 x 4.75 = 5 x 120.65

GRRRRRR Lost my post due to having to log on again.

          Ok.

Thank you all for your info. (ps thanks Wes, I almost got confused about the bolt pattern!)

Does anyone know if 2" backspacing really equates to 50.8 mm offset?

I can tell you that 2" backspacing on a 6" wide rim will stick out very far, lowrider style.
Nothing says "triumph of enthusiasm over physics" like a Front Wheel Drive race car.

Easy metrics for you: 25mm= 1 inch 50mm=2 inch, see a pattern here?
So that would make 50.8= ? Ok, if you guessed 2 and a 1/16th inches you'd be right!

i have 15x8" wheels on my festy that have a 5 inch backspace or 1 inch offset so thats 125mm backspace or a 25mm offset. this is how they fit, a little rubbing on full turn.

                  What size tire?

...and what do you call "a little rubbing?"
