  • Wheels studs with wheel adapter

After completing the 15" wheel upgrade (inspired by thirdman), I figured it would be safer to use an adapter for the rims as opposed to a bunch of spacers. Besides I hate not having wheel studs.

I have 5/16 spacers on in the rear right now (yes I know 1/8 spacers would fix my issue)- I have a slight rubbing. So to alleviate the rub I ordered some 16mm Adapters that are 4 lug for the festy.

Problem that I have is that the studs must sit flush with the top of the adapter. I am not sure what size (length of stud) I need. I went to the parts store and as usual they are clueless.

I am going out to measure but since I have never had to "add" studs to a car, I'd like to get some input from the experts who might have already done this.

Please take into consideration the 16mm adapter as well as the brake drum, etc...

    Any thoughts? Please advise.

I am looking for a resource that will have some studs that are approximately 30mm. I have done some searching on this board but alot of the links are old and no good.

    So I am thinking the size should be (grade 8 ) 12m x 1.5 x 30mm

BTW, I went to Autozone and all they had where the regular studs with the cap and serrated collar. That won't work. I need the regular studs that will go in with an allen key or something like that.

    Any suggestions?

I checked them both. Gorilla doesn't have any studs and EZ has studs but not at the length I need (I know I can cut them down but I'd like to see if I can find the appropriate length first)

        Thanks for the idea, though..

I'm also really interested in this, does anyone know which of the gorilla wheel studs at the bottom of that chart applies to us?

It's ok if the wheel studs are long.

I missed that section in the gorilla catalog.

I suppose I can to the 1.5" (38.1mm) and cut them down. I was hoping to be able to use the allen key and not have to cut anything...

I need to check the ebay bmw conversion...Just checked it and it's $24.95 + $9.95 shipping... Kit includes 20 pieces. I only need 8... I'll keep shopping...

Apparently, I purchased a funky style wheel adapter where the stud must sit flush with the top of the adapter. The adapter also comes with a nut that is shaped like a cone and once tightened it will also sit flush.

I think I'll be ordering the gorilla studs. Just not sure if I should get the 1.5" or the 1.75" (38.1mm vs. 44.45mm). I was hoping to be able to keep the allen key head for ease of installation so I was thinking of simply buying longer studs and cutting off what I don't need.

According to my calculations I need almost exactly 30mm. However, I've noticed that all of the studs have a small section that is threaded and then there is an "unthreaded" gap or space followed by the remainder of the threads. Is there a specific purpose for this? (I'm asking because I'd probably be cutting this off).

I was thinking of cutting the end that is designed to screw into the drum thus leaving me the proper length with the allen key head side of the stud to use for installation.

Am I thinking correctly? I want to make sure I only have to do this once...

I would say that the unthreaded shoulder it to keep the stud from going too far into the drum. As in, so far that it makes contact with the brake springs, wheel cylinders, etc.

Along with it gives an area for the stud to be "snugged up" so when you install the nuts and the go to remove them the studs don't unscrew from the drum.

I suppose liquid threadlocker would work if you did cut them down being you would have the allen head for removal later on.

That's what Iwas thinking. There is no danger of me going in too far because I'm going to do the install with the drums off the car. Only takes a few more minutes...

                            Better safe than sorry.

yeah, don't cut that sholder off, use red thread lock and before you cut anything, spin a nut onto the stud and then cut, the nut will ensure a clean thread once it is removed.
