  • Aspire rear is in!

Here is an update on my assembly. Put the rear suspension in. I'm using an aspire rear beam with KYB GR2 struts and FMS lowering springs. What a pain this was. I had 2 aspire rears and my festiva rear. All the strut mount bolts broke, on all 3 beams. I had to cut all the struts off the beam I used and remove the bolts from the beam. Then I had to buy new bolts. I guess this was best anyways. When you assembly the struts USE antisieze.

Now on to the front. Similar situation there, the control arm nuts spun inside the frame so I'll deal with that next.

Note that I missed the front edge of the bumper cover when I painted. The way I had them position I missed the edges with the gun, I'll touch that up later.

            Thanks for the pics, Matt.

When I did the rear end of my '89L, I think I tried to remove the Festy struts from the old rear axle, but it wouldn't budge. I just used the Aspire struts already on the Aspire rear end (I didn't ask the yard for them, but they came with the other parts and I'm glad they did!) and stuck the whole shebang up into my car.

My worst problem was CORROSION with a capital C! All the brake line to hose junctions were too rusted to loosen, so I cut the brake lines. The worst of the worst were the front control arm to body bolts. I hired a guy with a torch and air wrench to finally get my control arms off.

Then I put all the new stuff on and had Procare finish the new control arm bolts and put on new brake lines (I did the RF brake line using a junkyard line I pulled since it wasn't too hard).

I drove to Procare on the E-brake alone! Fortunately, it was only two or three blocks on quiet streets.

Next time I'll be more ready with better tools and I'll begin Liquid Wrenching all bolts and nuts a few weeks beforehand!

My '93GL is pretty rustfree, though, so I'm hoping things go smoother.
