  • Making Pinto wheels fit

My son had a set of white cast slot wheels from an old Pinto S/W on his Escort with a brand new set of tires, and a deer and rust finished the Escort. We picked up a couple of Festivas and he wanted his wheels and tires. So I put the wheels on the mill and elongated the bolt holes .125 outward and used a 3/4 ball end cutter to put the taper seat back and they fit great and look good too.

It would probably be safer to have machined four new holes rotated 45 degrees from the originals....my .02 cents worth

Not really, old uni-lug of yesteryear used this system and they supported cars twice or three times as heavy as the Festy. It drives very well, turn in is awesome, like driving a go-cart.

So all the holes have been bored exactly, and the wheels don't bounce?

Yes, the holes are spread exactly .125", I put the first one on my Festy and took it down the road. Ran it up to 80+ and was fine, also b/4 I mounted the tire I put the rim on the back of my Festy and spun it watching the edge in comparision to the spring perch, no bounce.

you could have done an aspire swap, then you would have had to do a lot less machining and would have had better handling!

Unilugs also used special washers to support the lug all the way around and used a straight lug nut to locate the washer (wheel) and compression of the washer and wheel to hold it in place. Using a tapered lug nut that is supported only part way around it's circumference imparts a side load on the lug that is was not designed to handle. Another .02 cents worth.....
