195/45/14's what rim width

I'm looking into tires/wheels for the bpt car. Thinking of 195/45/14's. I checked www.1010tires.com and they say to use a 6-7.5 in rim for this tire. How strick is this measurement? I have a set of 14 x 5 rims from an escort lx and also looking at a set of miata wheels 14 x 5.5.

Should I be looking for a 6" wide rim?

when i had my 185/60/14s installed, they suggested that a 5.5" rim be used but i have them on a 6.5 and they fit fine. if anything, the narrower you go with the rim, the taller the tire gets. personally i don't like the look of bulging tires but that's me. the miata wheels will do fine, but DO NOT use the escort rims, they're at the point where the tire can't hold a solid bead on the lip.

BTW where do you get 195/45's? and for how much?

now I do, I was also looking at 195/45/15's that's why i mistakenly posted that. They had 14's on the site yesterday and now they don't. I've seen them elsewhere.

i noticed that someone posted a tire size guide and listed the 185/60/14's as being 21mm taller than stock, which should significantly affect MPH readings, yet when i drove by an automated radar gun, it read dead on with my speedo. this tells me that the MPG numbers that some ppl are seeing are grossly inflated.

Matt, I woul'dn't go thinner than a 6" wheel for those 195/45s. The aspect ratio is too low. If they were 195/60s, I'd say okay for a 5.5" rim.

TIA (Tire Industry of America) recommends a 5 1/2 J to 6 1/2 J rim for that size tire.

My 195/45/14 are on 6" wide rims. Onlinetires.com carry's 195/45/14 tires too.

I plan to get some Mazda Miata "hollow spoke" 14 X 6" rims for those tires when I get them for Speedstiva. 5.5" rims would probably be safe enough, but my guess is they would not provide ideal handling.

I'm using a 5.5" rim from a Sukuki Swift GT with those tires. My tire installer, who is the only Toyo dealer I found around Toronto with enough weight to actually get those tires, said it would be fine. It definately looks ok and handles awesome.

I'm looking at getting a set of bmw bottlecaps. 14x6, 4x100, 35mm offset. Compared to the stock 4.5" wheel, it should be about 14mm closer to the strut, and 27mm towards the fender. I might have to roll the fenders a bit to make them fit, but ohwell.


I found a better wheel and tire calculator. It doesn't do 12" wheels though, but it's good for everything else. More features than the miata.net one.
