n00b question about wheels

    n00b question about wheels

    I need some new tires for my festiva and since I am still rolling on 12's and tires are getting harder and harder to find I figured I would go ahead and up grade my wheels while getting new tires. I wanted duel bolt pattern wheels so if I can ever find an aspire suspension and swap it out I won't have to bother with new tires.

    So here is the question. I want to make sure that these tires will fit the festiva http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-New-14X6-4...-/190668420327 I'm pretty sure about everything except the Rim Hubbore being 0. I'm really hoping this will not matter because these are exactly what I am looking for at a killer price.

    Sorry for the n00b question, I just like to be 100% sure about something before I lay down money. Thanks for the help!

    Those should fit perfect. Just make sure that you can get some thin meat for them. You should be shooting for an outer diameter total on the tire of 22" or less on a stock festiva suspension.

          I like those tires. I hope I can get them from my local guy. I get free tire rotations and if anything goes wrong with the tires he fixes it with no questions. I've been getting my tires from him for 15 years now and I've gone to church with him all my life.

            No issue with the hub bore. Get 'em. And you will want to upgrade to Aspire brakes, since the 14" wheels/tires will increase your stopping distance, since they are heavier. At least upgrade the fronts. You can keep a 12" tire for a spare. If you get a front flat, just take off a rear tire and put it where the flat one was, and put the 12" spare on the rear.

              I actually had this conversation with a friend today at lunch about needing bigger brakes for something like this. It's been a while but I think what happens in technical terms is that you increase you rolling mass moment of inertia. For example if you have a ring and a solid disc that weigh the same and you run them down the same ramp the ring will win every time because it has a greater rolling mass moment of inertia. Which means when you put weight further out on a wheel even though it weights the same it takes more energy to stop. See I did pay attention in class

                I have a set of those Konigs in 13x5.5" size. They seem like a good quality wheel for the price. I mounted my race tires to them and ran them on the track without any problems.

                  While this is true, the upgrade to a brake master cylinder from a '94 Protege will remedy said issue.

                    For the record, I have 15" wheels with tires of the same outer diameter and width as those 14" tires your looking at on my 93 automatic. It has stock brakes and the car stops better than with the 12" tires. Actually, it's a considerable difference. 12" tires are scary. I have 16 of them with good tread and there isn't one that is round, lol. They are noisy, they are wobbly, they are unstable. A good quality tire that is of similar diameter will provide better braking than the available 12" tires do (I have Kumhos, Firestones, Lemans, and some other no name brand on both steel and alloy wheels). I have driven my 89L for three days on it's nearly new 12" tires and I can not wait to get these things off of the car. The Festiva is an amazingly well designed car, that was horribly detuned from the factory. Those Federal formoza tires are a good riding tire, they are a bit noisy, and not the best in the rain, but they are much more stable than the 12" tires.

                      This observation applies to me as well. Premium quality 12s are non-existent in n America. My switch to 14s, via an Aspire swap, was entirely like driving a different car. At highway speeds there are no longer any vibrations or shimmy.
