  • Rio Brake/ Escort Calipers

I have a 92 auto testy. I have been collecting parts from a 2002 Rio for a brake swap. The early Rio has 9.25in rotors very similar to the 5spd Aspire. The Aspire calipers seem to work with the Rio assembly.

Is it possible to use Escort calipers with the Rio brakes? What year Escort do I need, and what model (GT or LX)? There is quite a difference in price, and I would like to keep cost to a minimum.
Will I need 14 inch wheels with Escort calipers? My biggest reason for converting is for the bolt pattern, and I would like to be able to use 13 inch wheels from the Aspire.

    Thanks

IIRC, you'll want the Escore GT calipers and if you run those, it's 14" minimum wheels.
    Trees aren't kind to me...

    currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

Are they? I am not sure. Which year Escort Wagon?

I thought they Wagon calipers are same as the GT calipers, with "14" on the cast.

I have a 3rd gen(97-02 IIRC) wagon. Undoubtedly the heaviest Scort wagon. I can check them when I think of it, and it stops raining long enough. Looking at calipers on RA, I don't see any stipulation about body style.

Rockauto is somewhat confusing when looking at parts for vehicles of which I am not familiar with, and I can't afford to purchase parts I can't use.

I am leaning towards just using some JY Rio calipers that I already have, just not sure what condition they are in. I will probably trade them in as core to buy rebuilt Rio calipers. They will fit 13" wheels and I need to be able to use the Aspire spare, if and when I have trouble.

That's what I would do... I would venture to guess they would interchange being same height and all but really it would probably be best to not hybrid everything. There has to be some reason they designed these different and eventually I'm afraid one of us will go too far and pay a huge price for all these mods. Stick with the rotors the calipers were designed for, and vice versa. I have calipers and rotors from a 98 protege on my aspire swapped Festy with aspire 13's but who knows how long it will last, its only been a few days...a few days of me flogging the crap out of it, but still...give it time.

I think that sounds best. I am going to just go buy some rebuilt calipers for a Rio and have some peace of mind. I need to remember that the money spent on the entire swap is still less than a just a few "new car payments".
