The OE springs are really long because they are really soft. Probably something like 14-15" or longer if I had to guess. You can get away with much shorter ones if they are stiff enough, especially with threaded adjuster sleeves.

why not the mount base? Perhaps that would require a longer spring?

Then that limits your tire width a lot, and the amount of negative camber you can run. These cars love negative camber.
