I just installed a set of GR2 struts/shocks on my boat ('91 Festiva) and cut the coils for a 10% increase in spring rate which worked out to .61 of a coil off the bottom of the ear springs and .67 of a coil off the bottom of the front springs.
10% cut of the springs isn't that noticeable because I didn't really want to shake any fillings loose, but it's was a good match for the GR2's
BTW-I've probably chopped the springs on about everything I've ever owned: cars and motorcycles and the 10% rule (of mine) is decent for the street. I've doubled it for track only cars.

I cut my springs on my car, but everyone maybe right about tire wear issues and such. It probably wouldn't be a problem if you realign your car after you drop it. But when I lowered my car, I cut the small coil on top followed by two full coils underneath that. Front and back. I replaced struts in the back with gabriels from autozone, and blew out one already. Not because it was lowered so much but I think it was valved bad. I plan on hardbarring the rear suspension later, but I plan on lowering it more in the next week or so. I think the KYB supers can handle it up front.---------------------------------------------------
