  • Cutting Spring Perch

Hey all, just wondering if I could cut the edge off a small portion of the perch so I can get my new wheels to fit. Would it be safe? I'm assuming it wouldn't make much of a difference if I cut it right. If you are wonder what I'm trying to fit on my '98 Festiva (Aspire), the tyres are 205/40 R17.

Instead of cutting, try using a spacer, unless you already have spacers. That is a wide tire to try and fit!

    Coilovers would allow more room

Unfortunately spacers and wheel adaptors are illegal over here in Australia but one insurance company does cover them if they aren't the cause of the crash, lol. So I could get adaptors but if the police find out then I can be fined. Yes they are quite wide but they look so awesome! I thought it was worth the effort to trim off the spring perch or to even adjust the camber if it was possible. This is only occurring on the rear by the way.

You might try just shaving the perch where it would contact the tire--i.e. instead of cutting a whole section out, just do a little diagonal trim right next to the tire.

I would recommend the simplest route which for me was to get tires in stock diameter to match the rims in question.
Then i make the tread patch width smaller.
This slightly stretches the tire giving it more of a rounded edge which may pull out of the way if the correctly sized set of stretched tires are fitted. It will save you the headache of all the extra work hopeufully

You can certainly just take a grinder to the edge of the perch and thin it or remove it for a short distance. But it is thin steel, so you are not going to gain very much clearance and it probably won't solve your problem.

I wonder if using a thicker C shaped spring perch would be legal or undectable from stock?

                Use a thinner tire.
If it don't fit, use a bigger hammer!
