The most hardcore without a torch?

What would be the best performance suspension/ brakes and struts combination I could put on my '87 L? I hope to be stuffing a escort GT motor or Capri turbo in it so with that in mind, what would you recommend?
I want to do as much as possible without breakin' out a torch and welder, but if the difference is substantial I will consider getting it done.
I would like to end up with something like a street legal SCCA ride.

Teins coilovers with Aspire brakes. Bolts on withput modifacations. You could always upgrade to good pads and shoes, get slotted/drilled rotors. Add a FMS front stut brace.

I would like to go widebody but without a huge body kit. I like old school with the screwed in flared fender look. Maybe some old school ground effects to. Would an older Jetta kit work? I would like the scca looking alloys on it with a good lip. How wide could I go on tires? I'd like to jump up to at least a 13" if not 14's.
