  • Festiva wheels on Aspire brake swap?

I'm sorry if this is an ignorant question, but can you use the stock Festiva wheels after an Aspire brake swap?

Check this link for a how to: http://projectmazda.com/festiva/tech/aspirebrakes.htm

One item that is overlooked on aspire swaps lists I've seen is to pick up another spare (donut). Make sure you grab one with the 100mm bolt circle.

          Thanks!

I have a problem with numbers - math is the one subject I suck at.

Most likely I misinterpreted the list.

To make sure I'm on the right track:

          1993-88 Ford- Festiva 12 x 4 40mm offset

I presume 12 is the length of the wheel in inches, 4 is its width, and 40 mm how far into the wheel the holes are?

If I interpreted it right, would that mean the 155s on my car are actually wider than the wheel itself?

4 is the number of holes or bolts if you prefer.
Is that a Festiva that just passed me?!?!?!

Not trying to contradict you or anything, but I don't think that refers to the # of holes - on other wheels it's different:

              1992-91 Ford- Tempo 14 x 6 39.4mm offset (7 straight spokes)

              1996-95 Eagle- Summit 14 x 5.5 (7 straight spokes)

I would have to agree that the second value is the width of the rim in inches.

Here is the wheel tech page from tire rack website: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/wheeltech.jsp. Info on bolt patterns and offests, etc.

14 x 6 39.4mm offset - 14" diameter, 6 inch width, and 39.4mm offset. No mention of # of holes or hole bolt circle (spacing). The bolt spacing (100mm or 114.5mm) is the diameter of an imaginary circle formed by the centers of the wheel lugs.

Thanks for clearing the wheel thing up for me!

Here's part 2 of my question. The typical tire on a Festiva says:

                    155-80R12

It's my understanding that 155 is the width in MM, 80 is the height of the sidewall in MM (not sure on this one...), and 12 is the size of the wheel in inches.

So 155 mm is more than 4", right? Do they kind of squish the tire on so it fits? How exactly does that work?

And a tire with 90 instead of 80 would be taller?

Also, what's meant by "spokes"? The # of holes in the wheel?

                    Regards,

                    Tim

155 would be the section width of the tire. The tread is narrower than the section. the sidewalls bulge out some (adds to the cushion effect) from the rim, which is why its wider numerically. 80 is a percentage of section width, or 80% of 155mm. And 12 is the rim diameter.

For wheels, 4x114.5 is 4 bolt or lug holes on a circle 114.5 (4 1/2 inches) in diameter.
14x6.5 would be a 14 inch rim with 6.5 inches of width.

oups my mistake, but usually, when you right down the size of a rim you don't consider the width of the rim. If you've got a tire of 15" than it'll fit on almost any 15" wheels. There is some exeptions but on standard cars (like the festys) you don't care about the rim width. As for sure any 12" and 13" tire will fit on any 12" and 13" wheels.

PS I'm talking about rims coming from cars not after market one.
