  • What is the absolute lightest Wheel and Tire combo we know of?

~ One that has the same tread width and diameter as stock - or 1/2 inch larger diameter (to match the odometer gearing) but not super duper off the deep end expensive...

I'm not the first one to explore this, and I need to get over the urge to re-invent what other people already know. But by using narrow sidewalls on taller rims (because rubber weighs more than alloy) and with different spoke or dish designs somewhere out there is the most efficient wheel and tire combination that a Festive or an Aspire can spin - one that takes less energy to rotate and change the speed of rotation. One that is the most responsive of all for road conditions and quick steering.

    All based on overall lightness!

But there is no consolidated list that calls out the total weight of wheel and tire examples here...
(it would need to be the assembled weight of ONE tire and ONE rim, if you want to contribute a direct measure)

Cheap to light ratio would be Konig Heliums. 15x6.5, 11.4 pounds, for around $350 a set.
          Current cars:

1993 Ford Festiva 5-Speed - Festiclese III - Cousin of the Banhammer - "The Jalopnik Car"
          1984 Toyota Cressida - 2JZGE Swap, Turbocharged.
2013 Mazda Mazda2 - Exhaust and Wheels (the daily)
          2002 Toyota Tundra - V6/Auto/2WD - The Tow Vehicle.

You are missing a data point people - please list the exact weight of a wheel and tire (mounted on the rim) so that we can compare. That way we can take the guess work out of it completely

A matching tire on the Konig's mentioned for example - what would the total be?
(It can be estimated by adding one to the other)

~it's wierd that the weight of tires on a comparison chart seems to be a thing nobody that sells tires bothers to list

Even a chart of rim weights set opposite a chart of tire weight would work, in fact that would be ideal (you would think) except for one thing:

It would not be for tires and wheels that fit a Festiva -specifically-

I was hoping for inputs from members who already worked out what tire fit what rim the best, because otherwise I might be looking at a chart (for one thing) that was based on a tire or a rim for a Buick or a Dodge truck for all I know...

So if any of you have a scale out in your garage some day when you take a wheel off, can you help me out?

~ after all, only a fool in this day and age spends money rediscovering what a simple question can answer. Been there, dunnit...

Maybe if it were turned into a contest for kudos - "Who has the lightest wheel and tire on their Festiva right now?"

22 is the lowest so far, with a:

                145/80 r12's gt radial maxtour 827 pounds, 35psi
                0.32 tread.
145's aluminum stock rims 22 pounds with tire

                Anything lighter?

But 145 is how wide in inches of tread width?

Is it stock width or plus some?

The lightest I've seen is 155 60 13 (can't remember the brand right off) on Honda VX wheels (9lbs).
                  21lbs total.

If you arent asking if the tire is 145inches wide stock but for me to measure it- its 4 1/8 wide. My winter tire in the same size is 4.5in wide, im not sure what standard would be though, those are just the 2 i had available to measure.

That's awesome Ryan, I think you set the standard!

If what Skeeter saw was on a 9 pound rim, it was 12 pounds of tire in a 60 series

So far stock aluminum and stock steel except the Konigs that were mentioned

Great idea Greywolf. Here is what I can add to the list :
                        Wheels : Ford Escort GT, Ford part #FOC6-1007-CA, 4 x 100 lug spacing, 15 x 5.5, 48mm offset, 17 lbs.
Tires : Kuhmo ecsta PA31, 195/50 R15, 18 lbs., 22" installed diameter. Wheel and tire weigh in at 35.2 pounds. These are going on the '93 car that is awaiting the B6T swap. Before pulling the B3 I did the Aspire rear axle conversion with Aspire struts and had no clearance issues. I have yet to put the Aspire front hub brake conversion on. this will be done in conjunction with the B6T installation. I also plan on doing coil overs at all 4 corners especially since I have since put the Aspire rear struts on the '91. This should address any clearance issues with the exception of wheel well/body issues. I will roll the wheel wells if needed. The last picture is what I am running on the '91. These 5 spoke (4 x 114 lug spacing) of unknown manufacture came off my '91 Capri donor car. The previous owner did the plastic dip thing and 2 years later it is peeling. When I re-paint the '91 (SE aqua to match the '93 of course) I will strip the plastic and polish them. The tires are Douglas 185/60 R14. Installed diameter is 22". Clearance issues as follows. Fronts clear pretty good with a slight rubbing on the inner fenders when turning the wheel full lock. That's easily fixed by not turning the wheel full lock. Occasionally they rub the fender when the suspension bottoms out. This has happened a few times in the last year I have been running them. On the back I had issues. These were easily solved by borrowing the Aspire struts from the engine less '93. They locate the springs higher up on the strut body giving you another 1-2 inches of clearance. Next problem was tire to trailing arm clearance. This was solved with a 10mm spacer between the drum and wheel. Spacers are no fum with wheel bolts so I installed a set of screw in wheel studs. I know about the horror stories (dragon healer) of the screw in studs but this car does not see track time and I did use Loc-Tite 171 red on the threads. No problems so far. The speedometer is right on point with the 185/60 14's. Can anyone identify the 5 spoke 14's?

@ 35.2 pounds I will be looking for a different tire/wheel package. First thing is getting the B6T in and getting it drive-able. I went with the Escort Gt wheels and Kuhmos because of the price. They were almost free.

Anyone want to add to this list? I got a deal on the Kuhmos. Now that I realize how heavy they are I will be keeping my eyes open for lighter options. Tires and wheels are considered unsprung weight. It has been said that every 1 pound of unsprung weight is equivalent to 10 pounds of sprung weight.
Greywolf had a great idea with this post. It would be nice if we could all add to it and Mr. Moderator could make a sticky with it.

From what Ive read civic hx rims are 11 pounds each. With the tires I'm running I believe are around 11 pounds as well. So 22 pounds per wheel
