  • The Inevitable Wheel Question

    Hey, Guys.

(forgive the long post - I'm trying to sort all this out in my head, and I know diddly-squat about tires/wheels)

I've been cleaning up my '93. It's finally on the road. I have NO plans to do the Aspire swap anytime in the near future, and my tires are crap (and 1 of my rims is pretty bent up too) so I am looking to move up to 13" or 14" steel rims on the original Festiva setup. So I did my fair share of researching in these forums (most noteably, of course, the big sticky'ed list), went to the local tire place armed with information, and was told I needed more information. I knew the bolt size (4x114.3mm) I knew the offset (+40, aka "H" for high) but that list didn't include the center bore (which I now know is 59.6, or around 2.5"). I found this thread: http://www.fordfestiva.com/forum/vie...ght=centerbore which had a much more in-depth list (but hard to find while searching because modernbeat had "centerbore" written as one word and I was searching for "center bore" - doh.)

So, based off of his list, if I am looking for 13" or 14" steel wheels that will just bolt right up, I need to cross off the list:
    * the ones with not enough offset
    * the ones where the centerbore is too small
    * the ones where the bolt pattern do not fit (according to the list, the 4x108s)
    * the 15"+ sizes, because I'm not interested

So by my understanding, once I cross all those no-nos off the list I am left with these choices:

    MERCURY TOPAZ 88-90 13 X 5 4X114.3 59.6 H
    MAZDA GLC 82-85 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 59.6 H
    MAZDA 323 9 86-89 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 59.6 H
    MAZDA RX7 GSL/SE 84-88 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 59.6 H
    MAZDA 626 83-87 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 59.6 H

and if I get hubcentric rings (which I am only vaguely aware of what they are, but the local tire place should be able to provide?), then these are additional options, as their center bore is only a bit bigger:

    SUZUKI SWIFT 89-96 13 X 4.5 4X114.3 60.1 H
    SUZUKI SWIFT 89-97 14 X 5 4X114.3 60.1 H
    HONDA ACCORD 90-96 14 X 6 4X114.3 64.1 H
    HONDA PRELUDE 92-96 14 X 6 4X114.3 64.1 H
    NISSAN STANZA 79-83 13 X 4.5 4X114.3 66.1 H
    NISSAN SENTRA 83-86 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 66.1 H
    NISSAN AXXESS 90-on 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 66.1 H
    HONDA G20 91-96 14 X 6 4X114.3 66.1 H
    NISSAN STANZA 87-92 14 X 6 4X114.3 66.1 H
    KIA OPTIMA 01-on - 4X114.3 67.1 H
    PLYMOUTH VISTA 85-91 13 X 5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI MIRAGE 3 85-92 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI PRECIS 3 83-93 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI GALANT 85-96 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI MIRAGE 85-92 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    PLYMOUTH VISTA 85-94 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI EXPO 91-95 14 X 6 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI STARION 83-85 14 X 6 4X114.3 67.1 H
    MITSUBISHI CORDIA,TREDIA 83-88 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 - H
    MITSUBISHI CORDIA,TREDIA 86-88 14 X 5.5 4X114.3 - H
    DODGE COLT 3 79-92 13 X 5.5 4X114.3 H

but of course, I think a lot of the above are alloy wheels (I think most of the Mitsubishis?) and since I'm limiting myself to cheaper steel, my options are actually a lot less. (this is where the sticky'ed list comes in handy)

So, my actual question (yes there is one buried in here) is, Am I understanding this information correctly? Basically, this is a very muddled topic, both on this board and when I try to get a tire place to cross-reference stuff in their books/computers. (i discovered that many of the above cars are listed in various books as being 4x100, including the Festiva itself, amking the whole thing a bigger mess to research)

I have a lead on some 14" Mercury Topaz rims at one of the local salvage yards. The center bore looks a little big, but otherwise, the salvage yard guy's books say it should match up fine for bolt and offset. But of course, part of the mystery is that the Mercury Topaz shows up 3 times on the above link's list: one has a too-small center bore, one has the wrong bolt pattern, and one is supposedly perfect. So I might buy them and hope the bolt pattern matches, then take em to the tire place and hope that they do the hubcentric ring thing. Does this sound like a good idea, in anyone's opinion?

I would love to see a list here that was simplified to "I have [these rims] taken from [this car] and they fit". it would make my dumbness seem less apparent.

Did you read this far? wow!

    tom.

I ran about 1980 13" corolla steel wheels on the stock festiva set up. fits great, looks good. Ran it with toyo 165/70/13's. very happy with the performance.

The wheels i have on my red Festiva are from a 1992 Dodge colt, they are identical to the stock festiva steel wheels ,only they are 13X5.5" with stock festiva bolt pattern, but you will need hubcentric rings, center hole a little bigger. I painted mine black added chrome beauty ring, chrome center caps, I even had lug bolts chrome plated, with 175/70R dunlop sport tires, they fit good no rubbing front or rear nice ride and they look good.

That's how I treated mine. Painted black, chrome beauty rings, chrome centercaps. I think that looks good.

                Are those

Colt rims steel or alloy. I'd like to run a set of small truck tires on my festy and that rim width adds a few more tire options.

I know 84-87 RWD toyota's. Especially the SR5 model wheels work great. I had some on my 89 L. and Loved them.

they were like a 7 spoke. 13x5.5" wheel. aluminum. i'm not sure on the offset though.

Wish I had kept them, but I bent one and I ended up just selling them for aluminum scrap.
