Looking for a wheel tire combo for Auto-X SLICKS

I am wanting to find a light 13 or even 14 inch set of wheels that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

I need to run AT LEAST a 205, preferably a 215 or 225 tire.

Probably at least a 50 or even 45 or 40 series Hoosier slick.

Need to figure the offset needed to do so also, it will be a pretty deep dish.

I saw a Rabbit this weekend with just what I needed, but forgot to talk to the guy to get the sizes...


any ideas??

Here is the Rabbit and the tire/wheel set up that I want to emulate to a degree... maybe not quite as wide, these are at least 9 inches wide (over 225) but are quite small, and this car was smoking some very fast vehicles

I would go with Diamond Racing Wheels they make 13's and 14's in many different bolt patterns and offsets. Their 13x7 spun wheel only weighs 13 lbs, Cost 59.00 each. As for offset go with 4.5" Back spacing, this won't push the tire out too far passed the fender and will still give you enough inner clearance to fit your tires.

EXCELLENT, I have been reading some of your other posts to get a good idea of what I need.

My 185/60/13's rub a bit under hard cornering, and are almost 22" tall, so 20's should be OK wider with more offset. I agree with your wheel sizes..

NOW, what tire size??? There are some EXCELLENT deals on Ebay.... I am ready to buy!!!

That sounds like a 225 wide tire and will work great with a 7" wheel. (This is not true, the recommended wheel width for this tire is 5-6". I apologize to Quaddawg and anyone else who took this wrong advice.) Since the stock overall diameter is 21.764" with a 155/80 12R tire you will be reducing total dia. by ~1.75". This will lower your gearing a bit helping you accelerate quicker which will be countered by the additional friction and drag of such a wide tire. Running this smaller diameter will also help you avoid fender rub (esp. if lowered alot). I think this would probably be the way to go.

The R45A compound is the 3rd hardest of 4 in that size, not quite as sticky
as the R25a but will last a little longer. You can check out everything hoosier

Thanks Chris, I might just try those then, as with the harder compound, I will be forced to learn to drive it to go fast... and then, when ready (after some head and cam work) switch to a softer compound and newer tires...

My race tires are 195/55/14 victoracers. A lot of miatas use that size, and the really hardcore people dump their tires with plenty of life left in them.

Ox, that's what I ran for awhile... Some beat Victo's 195/55's on some old MR2 alloys (VERY HEAVY) but they worked until I sprung for a set of new ones. -Kyle

To anyone using this thread as advice: I saw FC's edit. I caught my mistake soon enough, and had Diamond weld me up some 6" wide wheels, with 3.5" backspace. I will report back with fitment.

The thing with the particular tire I ordered is this, it has a cantilevered side wall, it REALLY dishes in before it gets to the bead seating surface, this particular tire and sidewall is so stiff that there is NO WAY it would stretch to fit a 7" rim. 6" is perfect.

Many many tires can be stretched to fit wider wheels, and in the off road world, we can run a couple of inches either way from recommended widths, but in this particular Hoosier slick (20x8x13, road race) it is important to go to Hoosiers site and use the wheel that they designed the tires to fit.

Thanks again for all the help. In the long run, the wheels I chose: 13x6, spun. 3.5" backspacing are lighter too, 11 pounds, and cheaper $57 each. so all ended up great.

Here is a picture of the measurement of the bead width on my tires. You can take both hands and only pull the bead about 1/2" apart, and even that take great effort, stiffest sidewalls I have ever encountered, even in big bad offroad tires...
