  • Power steering

How difficult is it to install power steering if it wasn't something the car came with?

More importantly, I hear it's a rather rare option, can it be cannibalized from a different car (same parts?)

It isn't to hard to do, but it was only available in 90-91 Lplus and GL models. Basically you change the rack and pinion unit and install the pump, lines, and reservoir.

yes i saw one at a junkyard here about 2 weeks ago but did not get it because it was hot outside.but i noticed that the air conditioning lines were rerouted if i was looking at the engine it came from the compressor ran down the radiator support to the driverside fender well then to the fire wall then making a left to where it goes generally to the inside of the car. anyone else see this setup on the air conditiond power steering festiva before?

Musclecar_1 has that same set up on his car. If you do go back for it could you pull all the A/C lines and sell them to me?

OK, I know this is an old topic but I do have a '90 with air that I am not going to use. It is my parts car. The compressor is bad but everything else is OK. LMK if anyone needs anything. I need to repay the money I borrowed for the Wind Deflectors. Or I can work a trade.

25Horseplay, do you still need the lines?

what about adding power steering to a fest with no ac? iv rarely seen a festiva with power steering but the ones that i have seen also have ac and i can see that the ps pump pully is conected to the ac pully.

what if you dont have the ac compressor to hook the ps pully up to?

If you don't have A/C there is a adjustable tensioner pulley that goes on there.

When the compressor went bad on my 90 GL I just bought a shorter belt. Then I used the PS pump to tighten the belt. The compressor is still there, but it just doesn't do anything nor is it hooked to anything.

You don't need the tensioner. I did the same thing to mine and I never got a tensioner. It just uses a much smaller belt. It goes around 2 pullies instead of 3. The power steering unit is adjustable to tighten or loosen the belt.
