minigun minor updates

Well I had to burn a weeks vaction so I decided to spend it at home catch up on "honey dos" In between chores I have slipped some work in on minigun.

Got the fire wall in behind the seats, making the top cover now, its all aluminum. I have the rear bumper all but finished and Im working on the rear flares this week. I had a problem with engine coolant, bubbles trapped in the block so I added a surge tank up high in the back.

Are you going to Dynamat the firewall? Is that the tank youre talking about in the lower left hand corner? How are you going to route the Air cleaner? I see it there in the pic, is that where its going to stay?

The air cleaner may get moved. I just stuck it on there today. If it stays in place it will breath from the drivers side fender vent ( enclosed so it doesnt get engine heat.) The passenger vent may get a fan to draw in air while sitting still, just to blow air across the front of the engine.

With both of the coolant lines dropping down and back up to the radiator in the front it could trap air in the back, so to purge air I put in the tank, ( yes it the lower left of the pic)

Where you work has played a pretty good role in the quality of this build if I may say so.
Not that it wouldnt have been quality work. But arent there some things that may have been built with lesser materials otherwise?
Are you using the same material for over the engine as the firewall? Im guessing thats Stainless steel or Aluminum?

The firewall and cover are aluminum and may be covered with carbon fiber when done, just for "looks".

Im lucky, while Im not the best fabricator in the world I get to work with those that are. When I need to learn a new welding trick I can run down some guys that can weld beer cans together. Same with just about anything else, Then there is the endless supply of info on this board and the internet. To be honest I could have not built this thing 10 years ago.

The other good part about working in industrial maintenance is the "freebies", left over materials from projects that would end up in the scrap pile. ( like sheet aluminum for engine compartments )


You guys dont get to see my mistakes, stuff that gets redone ( several times sometimes) untill Im happy with it. Some of the simplest things will take the longest, Im still thinkning about the throttle system, cable or hydraulic

run a cable throttle, you won't be able to modulate a hydro system as well, and you'll have to bleed one more thing in the engine bay.

I would recommend some sort of sound deadener/insulation on the engine cover and firewall. I was about deaf and cooked after the first trip in the angry little blue car. I used layers of styrofoam, heavy duty aluminum foil, and ice and water shield (leftover from a construction project). As for the air cleaner, The fuel door was missing from mine, so I connected the airbox to the hole and made a scoop over it. If I was to build mine again, I would find a way to get more airflow through the engine compartment. ....Lots of heat build-up back there. Keep up the good work.
