  • Another BP Swap with Rebuild

Hey, so a couple months ago I found a 1991 Escort Gt with a bad tranny, good engine and low km on it. So I went out and bought the Escort and pulled the engine out of it.

After I found the car, I took the engine out, and brought it to my friends work (He is in the 2nd picture). Here we pulled the bad tranny off and took the engine apart.

Next are some pictures of the engine being pulled apart. There was about 167,000km on the engine (100,000miles) so we thought it would be a good idea to rebuild as much as possible.

The engine in the pictures keeps getting smaller and smaller!!!
If you look at the bottom half of the cylinder head, the 3rd port has some dark black on it. Any answers to what this is or how to fix it?
Other than the pulling apart, most of the parts have been fully cleaned except for the head.

And the last pictures are of the junk yard where I picked up a 1993 Festiva harness (since mine is a 1989 the wiring harness is all messed up), and I also found a nice exhaust manifold which is in the process of being cleaned up. I picked up the exhaust manifold for $20 with the help of Mike. The manifold looks a little rough right now, because I took off the brackets that would hold on the heat shield.

That's as far as I have gotten so far. I will keep updating as I go along.

Ya, we definately need to race when the car is finished. It will be a really close match, but just as you say Mike, there is no replacement for displacement! Which means if I ever decided to go turbo the car would be 0.2L faster than yours! (however much that actually is I have no clue). I can only hope.

Hey, I need some more help from anyone with knowledge. Now I don't need the "you are in over your head" type of answer, I need information.
I am rebuilding the BP engine, and I don't know how to take the cylinder head apart/ what type of tools I need to do it. Is there a how to for this somewhere?
I also would like a how to on putting the bottom half back together properly. Such as which tools I need (any gauges?).
Thank you in advance for any input!

Do you have shop manual yet? I just bought a Factory '92 Escort manual online for $14. I waiting on it to arrive. I am doing a BP swap but, not rebuilding. I'm just doing seals. I heard mine run though. Sounded and revved good. No smoke. The best how is a manual. Its a must have.
