  • Ordered the eBay fuel rail adaptor mentioned earlier. It won't get here until Oct. 5th tho; then I can install my AFPR. Meanwhile, Tuesday my wideband should get here, so I'll get it on probably Wednesday afternoon, and can drive around with it and report what it says.

Went to my two fave JYs yesterday. One had a gen2 323 I was gonna take a bunch of parts from, but it's already gone, dangit. I was thinking of getting the intake and modding it so I could just do a quick swap and have minimal downtime. I'll have to wait for another one to come along, or maybe I'll just go ahead and do up this one. I have a spare Aspire intake to practice on; if that goes well, it'll go on in place of the current Aspire one, when I stick the Matthew B3 long block into the Aspire. (Which I better get to fairly quickly, now that it's starting to get cooler.) The Aspire already has a Dickmeyer header, but stock Aspire exhaust after that (without a cat tho).

Took some pics of the dyno readout; this one seemed the most usable. Note that the readings only go to 4000 RPM for the first run, and ~3450 for the second run. Also see how flat the AFR is, on the bottom of the chart. Seems odd, and not sure what it means exactly. But it does pull quite hard all the way up.
For comparisons, look at the Matt D. B3 dyno sheet (post #153), from the same shop.

          • I think Stratified might be cheaper. Or get one from a forum member. Nerd racing had one he wanted to sell.

I know Statified is cheaper, but am not sure what their package consists of that makes it cheaper; i.e. is there a "you get what you pay for" thing going on here, or are they just cheaper than the MS site, and you get everything MS sells with the package?

I'll PM Nerd and see what he has to say.

                • I'm just saying, someone who's willing could assemble a pnp for you for cheaper. If you have the money though, go for a Stratified or diyautotune. That way if you have issues they can provide support.

You said it might end up on your Mustang, so I didn't know if it was PnP for the Mazda motors, esp. concerning the plug interface.

I'm inclined to Stratified or DIY, as you said for support reasons. Plus where's the guarantee if I get some random guy to assemble it?

I have soldered before too, but don't really feel comfortable tackling this kind of project. I think I would need to know a lot more technical EFI and electrical background info than just the physical skill of soldering in order to do it right. Even if I could get phone advice/support from DIY, it would probably take a while to get done; and I'm not likely to need the skill again.

I have 2 ms units. 1 is in my Festiva it is the ms2 pnp from stratified. The second one is a ms1 unit like gregs here's a picture
As you can see it just uses a jumper harness right now it's setup for a bp which has the same plug as a b3.
Ms used to sell the adapter for mustang but now I can't find it and have to make it. Not sure I want to do that for a couple hundred more I get a new unit pnp.
Plug n play just means the plug you need is on the unit.

                      • I think Mike might have one of the older Stratified units with the adapter harness... Adapts the typical megasquirt DB37 plug to the festiva ECU plugs. Newer units have the ECU plugs on board.

                          • Wideband coming in tmw, and ordered the fuel rail adaptor so I can use my AFPR.

Just had a long talk with Matt D. The upshot is that I will be sending him my intake for porting; ~$150-175. Not as good as a custom upper plenum, but definitely better than a stock intake. This will free up a major restriction and give me better dyno numbers all by itself. I projected ~100 WHP if the dyno run had been completed; I believe the number is that low because of a stock intake, which probably is flowing only 100 CFM, if that; while the head flows 155 CFM.

Along with that, I will have the AFPR and wideband. I can make some observations with these before sending the intake off, for before/after comparisons. Then off to the dyno.

Someone suggested teflon tape for the threads on the AFPR, since I need to change the side the hose goes in. Matt said do not use teflon tape, use teflon pipe dope (small 1 oz. tube @ hardware stores), as the tape will tend to tear as the pieces are screwed together, and fragments can come off and present a clogging risk.

Discussed the usefulness of aftermarket ECUs like Megasquirt. I may or may not end up getting one, depending on how happy I am with the improvements with the intake porting/AFPR/wideband setup. He said the stock ECU can support all the power this particular B6 head (with this porting job and this cam) has the potential to make. What the MS or other aftermarket ECUs would do for me would be to find a tune to smooth out fuel delivery and therefore power. I'm not gonna be using this as a competition car or anything like that, so I'll see how much I care about going to that extra level.

I don't disagree; I would say that is the last step to take, after porting/cam/header/intake work/AFPR/wideband. My guess is that all the things I just mentioned will satisfy 95% of drivers, so the only kweschun is whether I'm in that 95% or not.
