    Got spark. Felt it.

I then tried moving the distributor down a bit from it's position near the top of its arc. Still nothing.

Parts that were proven good from Aqua before teardown:

    -ECU
-distributor (taken off Aqua's B3 because my B6 one had a broken bolt)
-all of the engine compartment electronic thingies, including coil
    -block fuses replaced beforehand

Parts from Luxstiva (B6 swapped) who started and ran fine this morning:

    -VAF
-large air intake hose and assorted fittings

I'm using Lux's parts right now solely for testing convenience.

    Here's a guess:

Something from my B6 swap is not allowing her to start. I never heard this engine run before, plus I took it apart and put it together.

What might I have done wrong in putting it together or hooking it up?

What about gummed up fuel injectors? I looked at them and sprayed off the outsides, but didn't "deep clean" them at all.

Fuel lines switched ????? If you have spark and fuel then it's timing !! Is it trying at all or just cranking ???? Fuel lines is my guess !!!Or clogged inj I had to leave mine in a bowl of gas for a couple days then worked fine !!!!

How long has that engine sat? The injectors could be clogged.

I'm pretty sure the fuel lines were hooked up right to the rail. We blew through them at the end of finishing up the gas tank line install to ensure proper line purpose. Intake fuel line goes to lower B6 rail opening. (I have Luxstiva for reference.)

My engine just cranks. Absolutely no sound of "trying" to start at all. Would I get this with bad timing?

I'm thinking I'll pull my injectors and get them cleaned. There are also two 323s in the PnP right now. I should go there and pull those injectors and some other stuff I want. Lux will need cleaned injectors too, for best performance.

          Right now I'm being lazy.

It sounds to me the most likely problem is clogged injectors. (This engine was pulled from PnP back around 2006. It sat in my garage for four years or so.) If anyone disagrees, please post.

Time to pick up and do something. Thanks for the ideas!

Have you tried spraying starting fluid in the intake to see if it will try, if it is just your injectors shouldn't it try with starting fluid?

Hmmm, I may try that then. I'm investigating injector cleaning now. A local place charges $20 each for eight; $24 for four. I may scare up eight of them, since that's what I'll need. I figure these things are old and need a good cleaning by now. Also, putting them in matching sets might help the engine power and mpgs.

You might try cleaning them yourself. Here is a good writeup by perucho on how to clean injectors. http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...njector&page=2

I'm all for the DIY thang! Maybe I'll wait on this and see what others say in my separate "cleaning injectors" thread. Gotta have some more info first. Here is that thread:

Post your Festiva or Aspire repair and maintenance issues. - USE THIS FORUM FOR ANY TECHNICAL RELATED POST (IE. How do I change my oil?, How to remove axle from tranny?, etc)

I hope some more details about DIY injector cleaning will emerge. Specifically, whether ours are "high" or "low" impedance injectors and if a constant 12V source will hurt them or reduce service life. If you know, go there and explain!

Well, here's where I'm at today:

Interior is serviceable, for now. Headliner and rear plastic/trim/matting will come after I get her running.

Engine bay is complete and functional, for testing and yard running only. I'm using Luxstiva's air intake and VAF. I have extras, but I haven't put them together yet. I want to do an "over the air plenum" install, with the cone filter over my alternator. That way I can keep my battery in the usual location since Aqua will be a 2 seater "working" Festiva and I want maximum load room in the back.

I took the battery out so I can charge it back up and tuck the cone filter into the space to close the hood.

Here is Lux's engine bay, less the air piping and VAF:

She started right up this morning and ran okay. Hadn't started her in months!

Well, I'll work on the wheel balancing and a few other issues while I sort out what I'll do with my injector situation. ASSuming that is the actual problem...

                  Later,

                  Karl

I was using the search function and fourd this gem:

"Clogged injector, this engine has sat for a year and a half. I checked the wires and they were good. I threw in the newer plugs and no difference so I pulled 1 wire at a time to see if there were any changes. When I did #1 the engine ran the same, pulled the plug and no fuel smell. I swapped out the fuel rail and injectors and runs fine."

It's from Matt Swabb, from back in 2006:

I've got fuel from my top mounted fuel filter, fuel to the rail (because I cleaned it all out when it was apart), but engine refuses to start. So...

I'll be taking out the spark plugs, turning the engine over and smelling for gas at the openings. No smell = no gas. Simple, eh?

Now if I smell gas and know it's getting in the cylinders, then it must be timing/engine related.

Odd Dream Influenced By The Mutt & My Festiva Addiction

So I hope you get Mutt up and running & she doesn't give ya to much of a headache Karl. But thought I'd let ya know I had a dream last night and after reading your build post the Mutt was in my dream  Well wasn't the Mutt exactly it was brand spanking new and shiny.........and mine LOL! But the driver's rear tire had a tire plug that was leaking just like my box does. So since the tire was leaking I went to the Farm & Fleet in the town I grew up in. And while there shopping for a new tire & found an isle and started to browse at B6 turbo/transmissions to put in it. Well after I got my tire and met a guy I haven't seen since high school he said he was glad to be able to see the box in person and really liked the brown/woodland camo and that the pics on FaceBook didn't do it justice (another mix of reality here resurfacing as an undigested lump of potato as Scrooge might say). Well people heard us talking about a Festiva and started to laugh. I told them wait till I get the engine swapped & they can't catch me while I'm still getting close to 40mpg! So I finish buying my tire and make my way to the parking lot to find that the high school acquaintance had somehow taken my boots off and tied them together/left them in front of the driver's door. Well I untie them and start to put my shoes back on after I get one on I here a car coming up. I look up in time to leap out of the way as an old lady with 2 of her friends in a mid 90's escort LX wagon (can you say I want power mirrors & the rear wiper gear in my Festy LOL) ram her rear end into my Mutt colored Festy I started to tell her to stop but she just kept going forwad and backing back into it over & over again. Finally I punched out the back window & the drivers window & pulled her out of the car. Well she just sat there like a zombie and her friends were yelling at me saying she had a brain tumor (ok just finished watching last episode of Heros other day think that's where the brain tumor comes from LOL). So a crowd of people gather around and start yelling at me for breaking the glass out and yanking her out of the car. Start telling me it's my fault and why am I so mad it's just a Festiva. Well at that point her grandson shows up with the football team on a bus and spits in my face and says its just a Festiva......well at that point I lost it and said it was a mint condition surf blue Festiva and thats why I'm so pissed and I crack him one straight in the jaw. Well he cracks me back and then everyone starts to spit on me and tell me its just a Festiva and I scared a little old lady with a brain tumor. The mob runs me off into a corner untill the cops show up. Then the cop tells me it is her fault but that its just a Festiva and I'm going to get assault charges and go to jail for yanking her out of the car. So then I wake up in full panic like from a nightmare..............and my fiance tells me I need to stop reading this forum so much and I have an unnatural love for my Festy :tongue3: LOL man I never remember my dreams but when I do they sure are dosies :laughing5::confused2::lol::laughing6::tard: :laughing2: Sorry man didn't mean to ramble in your build post but thought it might provide you with a laugh while trying to sort out the ignition woes

                        :p

Dave, what did you eat before you went to bed? I need to avoid it!

Surf Blue is a great color, eh? Enough to inspire deep seated jealousy in old ladies driving Escort wagons and entire football teams! And cops!!

I went to the 'yard this morning and got me a set of B6 injectors out of a '93 323. Got me eight more VW lug bolts for my VW wheels (ball seat). Also found a pair of stainless steel 1987 Sentra wiper arms (nice!) and a few knickknacks. A bit drizzley, but around 40 degrees and tolerable. Tomorrow or the next day I'll do my check on Aqua's fuel smell (or not) when cranking without spark plugs. Then I'll probably remove her injectors and take them in for rehab at a local place for a total of $160.

Oh, got me my transaxle clutch spring out of a '94 Aspire, since I can't find my original.

Things are moving along slowly; just delayed about a week or so. This weekend is supposed to be sunny, so maybe I'll try to start her again.

I took some pics of various things at the 'yard, but my camera wire is at work. Darn.

Skim, that was your car I took pictures of at FM4, then:

Which is exactly where I got the idea.

                            However...

I've looked for that 180 degree plastic turn pipe, but all I ever see is 90 degree turns. Is that a 3" diameter and where do I get one?

I spent a lot of time this morning at the 'yard looking for intake tubing. I pulled about five or six from various makes of cars and tried them on a B6 in the 'yard. None really fit. I hear there is a BMW year and make that has a full 180 degree turn but I forget what it was. An "E series," I think. None in the 'yard anyways.

I'm really anxious to build my intake, but I can't find a good 180 degree turn section.
