  • It lives! Rather loud, and pretty fast. It's a ton of fun. I think the computer has figured out the idle at this point, it seemed better after a bit of driving. Unfortunately, it looks as if the valve seals could use a bit of work as there was a fair bit of blue smoke on startup this morning. I'll keep monitoring it.

    • Good news, Bad news. Good news, it's probably not the axle seals leaking tranny fluid, bad news, I need a new speedo gear seeing as the stock one from the protege decided to depart during today's test drive. The cable wasn't attached and I just had it in there by Friction but I figured that was good enough, apparently not... The old one might be on the driveway (Long gravel road) so I'll search tomorrow in the light.

      • Long time no post. I was at college for the last nine months at beautiful Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for Mech. engineering. I will be dragging the car out from under its over today, it was in rough shape over spring break with a 5 year old walmart battery that is almost flat even with the float charger on it. I'l also have to pull the rubber cork that I rtv'd into the speedo hole to prevent it from barfing atf everywhere to check how much leaked out. This brings me to my question.
I have the G series from a protege but lost the speedo gear, what cable/gear combo will get me a working speedometer? and an actual dipstick in the trans so I don't have to use my finger and guess where it's supposed to be.

        Thanks

        • I don't think we can do anything about not having a real dipstick in a 5speed.

          • I wish we could, but I was talking about just having the gear assembly because it has a small "full" mark on it.
