  • The Elusive build thread

OK OK so before i begin, pics will be coming in good time. For now, a little intro of myself and the car and work done so far.

ive been a member here for a while now, and owned the car for the same time but simply never got around to actually setting up a build thread.

My name is Elliot, i live in perth in west australia and i own a mazda 121 carb.

I originally bought my 1989 Mazda 121 for $700.00 about 18 months ago as a cheap run around/daily/a-b car. 3 miles from home the day i bought it the cam bolt sheers off.
    great.
i get it towed home and get started replacing the cam bolt.
and what started as a quick fix it job has since turned into a complete rebuild.

    ok,
    all work by myself has happened over the last eighteen months, and in no particular order;

    chassis/body:
-entire car stitch welded, every seam, inside and out
    -deleted door handles/locks
    -deleted side molding and stamping
    -deleted and relocated antenna
-EK Honda civic side skirts (in progress)
    -custom 323 front bumper/splitter/spoiler
    -custom hood, venting and scoop
    -added side repeaters(toyota yaris)
-c/f rear spoiler (2005 suzuki swift) to be installed
    -deleted sound deadener

    electrics:
    -remote central locking
    -spotlights
-rear facing spotlights(to be installed, purely for those who wish to high beam me from behind )
    -2.5" stealth tacho
-kenwood h/u,front speakers, clarion door speakers/amp, token 12" sub
-red LED interior (cockpit style) lighting
    -green LED dash light conversion
-deleted fan, heating, heater box, piping etc
    -relocated ignition
-under dash (try and start it without flicking it) kill switch
-CAMS kill switch (power and ignition)

    engine(b3/carb):
-head ported/polished, decked to the max (about 1.2mm),recon'd. comp now about 10.3:1
    -cam regrind (waiting on shop)
    -new; ignition coil, distributor, leads
    radiator
    cam bolt/cam gear
    water pump
    pulleys
    all seals and gaskets
    -sump/oil pick-up cleaned, flushed
-delete water heating to intake manifold
-weber conversion. (not sure on the numbers right now, it came off a 1976 ford capri gt 1.6L)
    -cusco catch can
    -mounts filled with polyurethane
    -valve cover sanded/polished
    -extractors (awaiting delivery )
-custom 2" to 1.75" straight thru exhaust, suzuki 600 muffler (delete cat)

    trans(5m):
    -new linkage bushes
-shifter below pivot ball lengthened 25mm, shortened above pivot ball 25mm
    -custom shifter grip (50.cal shell)
-custom shifter boot (awaiting motivation to finish )

    suspension, steering and brakes;
    -recon'd manual rack
    -new lower control arms
-new pedders urethane bushes through out(lca's, sway bar etc)
    -new outer tie rod ends
    -aspire rear beam/sway bar
-aspire front and rear brake conversion
-callipers recon'd and powder coated red
-EBC green stuff pads and slotted rotors up front, generic drums and shoes in the rear
-s/s braided hoses front and rear (waiting on shop)
    -aspire b/booster
-coil overs, when i can actually find some to fit, or modified to fit will be installed. the most elusive part of the entire build. ive been looking for 12 months or so. i even went to a custom suspension shop, offering b-big $$$ to make me a set.. waitin to hear back from them.. not holding my breath...

    interior:
    -sparco monte carlo fixed back seats, re-upholstered sitting on;
    -welded in cross bracing
-delete rear seats, sound deadening, underlay, carpet and mouldings
    -delete rear seat supports
-battery in box in spare wheel well
-custom 0.6mm alloy sheet door panels, rear inner shell panels
    -delete roof lining
    -dome light ftw!!
    -tint ... in the future
-OMP 4pt harness driver and passenger.
    -modified handbrake, easy off function
-generic after-market "race" steering wheel. pretty lame..

wheels are 14" daihatsu charade gt's.

the final colour when finished will be brunswick green, not too dis-similar to british racing green. im gonna have a crack at this roll-on-painting-wet-sanding-make-car-look-frikkin-awesome thing. so far half car painted no sanding yet, weather and motivation big speed bumps here.

the car weighed in at 745kg when i bought it. with the amout of weight ive removed, and in some case put back welding etc, i believe ive got her down to the high 600's. maybe 685-690kg's? about 1500ib's..

i dont know what else to say really. looking back over a list ive got a lot more done than i thought!! really, really enjoying the build and i gotta say, more than half the stuff ive done i couldnt have with out the help and info available here at fordfestiva.com. you guys ROCK!!! and im always impressed with the cars i see on here..!!

anyway, until i get some pics up, (and actually make this thread valid :S ) its sayonara from me, and any questions im happy to answer. any ideas, im open. any critisism ill take, prefferably constructive though.

    till then,

    cheers,

    ELUSIVE.

Patience friends, in good time.. I am yet to fit the bumper yet so thatll be new to me too. Also its still in the middle of building and the car itself seconds as a tool box so theres shite everywhere. :p
Not being blessed with a workshop im doing everything in my carport. Big ups to my girlfriend for putting up with it..

Today I did however sew up a new shifter boot and finished new sparco covers. Those I can get a pic of for you all this evening.

                As promised:

Aspire brakes, ebc greenstuff pads, slotted rotors.

Every seam got the spot weld treatment.

Sparcos recovered in my colour theme.

Themed shifter boot also, note the .50cal shifter grip .

The bonnet, or hood should I say..

As she sits today, cf wing went on a couple days ago. Extra alloy supports were put on to help strengthen the whole thing at speed. With only two bolts mounting the wing at first it was inherently weak. Solid as now..

And there you have it. So much more to document, only so much internet speed..

Yeah the 1.3 will be staying, for now. Its the first car ive ever built from ground up and I wanted to learn with the b3 before I move on to something bigger.
Also looking forward to seeing what the little thing can do. Ill eventually get another festy one day and ill put the worked b3 in that.
As for future power, im still researching/making up my mind if I should go super high compression bp,itb's etc or bp+t...
We'll see what the future brings.
Saying that there is a 323gtr (bpt) half-cut for sale in south australia..... ...
