  • Dad's Festiva

My Dad just bought a new to us Festiva.

    It's a 92 turquoise Festiva L, manual 5 speed. It's got no passenger's side mirror or factory defrost/wiper.

We just bought it with new tires, an ignition tune up and a new pipe in the exhaust. Everything looks alright but the idle is off and it doesn't have as much pep as my automatic, surprisingly...

It's not my favorite color, but it's not my car...

We just fixed the sloppy shifter. The bushings under the shift lever were gone and you'd punch yourself and your passengers in the thigh trying to find first and reverse. Replaced it with a shoulder bolt. Drives nice, has a bit of rear bearing noise, but I think we can fix it.

Check the timing for the lack of pep and idle issue.

Looks good for a MI car!

Looks like you got trim rings too, I don't like them, but other do!

Congrats and when is your dad signing up for the board?

143K miles on it. Doesn't show it too much, most of the body panels are straight but the hatch has been replaced and repainted. It once was red and has an aftermarket defrost kit on it with a weird switch the PO mounted in the power mirror spot.

I think the timing belt might be off a tooth. Wishing the garage was empty and warm so I could check that for him.

The beauty rings are cool but two of them are bent. I'm thinking we'll paint the wheels black and shine up the rings and center caps.

I've already broken more things on the car than I've fixed. We went to the junkyard so I could educate him on parts that swap over. Grabbed long legged cartridge fuses and a few spare headlight/taillight bulbs. When we got home, we had the shoulder bolt to fix the shifter ready to go in but I decided to install the new cartridge fuses beforehand. Well the spades in the fuse block ripped off with the fusible links. I was careful too! Just old and corroded... We bought a universal fuse block for $10 that I soldered up with heavy gauge wire and new fuses. Even made a bracket to hold it where the other one was mounted. That was a two hour delay, hahaha. I also broke the fan switch on the thermostat housing trying to unplug it. Everything is just brittle like it would be on any old car.

My Dad isn't very tech savvy. He does use my old Blue Clamshell iBook G3 (with tons of modifications and upgrades, none the less) to surf craigslist and bookmark everything he likes... I don't know if the forum would be too much for him but I'll show him around, hahaha. Also, the guy that sold it to us was interested in the forum. He was really excited to hear about the WTB and FS section. Maybe we'll see him on here soon.

Well, if you can get your dad signed up and give him the very basics (PM, reply, quote), we can pretty much walk him through anything he might want to do. We do hand holding when we need too! Bet he'll be cruising the old threads like a pro in a few days!
