  • Danny's car B6 build thread

This is a compilation of all my work on this car over the past month. Most of this was posted at one time or another in the "what have you done to your festiva today" thread, but I figured I might as well make a whole thread out of it. Hopefully it can be helpful to those doing a later B6 swap in the future as well. So here goes.

Not mine but today I drove 300 miles round trip to pick up this:

Its the car Danny (kumalaba) bought from Paul (neaderpaul) recently. '90L-Plus 5-speed with 66k on it. Motor is supposed to be blown but it turns over easily enough with the starter. I'm gonna try a couple quick fixes and see if it will run. Doesn't matter much because its coming out anyway for an '89 B6 to go in . Should be a fun little car!
    ________

    Picked up the motor

It was a '90, not an '89 like they junkyard said. But I got some good stuff at the other junkyard to make all festiva-y so it should tuck in there nice and snug.

    ________

Finally got around to doing a little more to Danny's motor today. Got the flywheel and clutch on the new motor, as well as the water pump and water neck. Still need to get the water inlet cleaned up and installed along with its pipe and o-ring. Pulled the old front crank seal too, but I forgot that the front seal was still in the other box-o'-parts back at my house, so I didn't get to finish up the seal and timing belt like I'd hoped. Oh well, there's a weekend coming up

    ________

Finished building Danny's steering knuckles with new bearing and rotors today.

    ________

Finished everything on Danny's motor except swapping the motor mount bracket. Barely room to get to the bolt under the intake on a B3/early B6, the later B6 has the heater pipe on the intake even lower, so there was no way I could get a socket on it. Gonna have to use one of my beefy box wrenches on it and hit with a hammer. Ha! Lol.

    ________

Finished Festivafication of Danny's motor today:

    Installed:

    Intake piping mocked up:

    ________

Well, yesterday I rerouted (and shortened) the VAF harness to the driver side, moved negative batt cable to pass side, hooked up all the wiring on the back side of the motor including splicing IAC plug, installed starter, installed brake booster crossover tube and some other little odds and ends on Danny's car. Today I'll be making the battery tray and throttle cable bracket using the designs I laid out yesterday. Throttle bracket will be no prob, hopefully the same goes for the batt tray but it will be a little more intense fabrication so we'll see Need to install the positive cable today too.

    ________

Already finished the throttle bracket for Danny's B6 too, all before 8:30. Shaping up to be a fairly productive day lol.

    ________

Throttle bracket installed! After looking at that pic I realized that there was too sharp of a bend going at the bracket end, so I rerouted the cable a tad and its smooth now

And here is how the battery tray sits. Still have to take it back out and drill one more mount hole in the back, then clean up and paint and shes done! Has an inch of clearance between hood and terminals with hood closed. Not too bad

    ________

It is a 300cca U1R commonly used in riding mowers and golf carts. Should be enough for this car since it is a 5 speed with no AC. I had a 285cca one in my BP car for a while with no problems.

For the cables I'm going to run the positive along the front with the main harness up there that I had to pull out and rewrap after getting the VAF harness out of it. The negative I ran straight to the body under one of the airbox bracket bolts and then down to the engine. Should work right? Since thats basically what it used to do on the other side just bolted to the trans body rather than the block?

    _______

Tray installed... 100% bolt on with the factory airbox removed.

Battery in with nifty cambuckle tiedown. Still need to adjust it a little so the buckle is in the middle instead of to the side so it is easier to tighten, but it should work just fine.

    ________

Ran Danny's car with some starter spray for a few seconds. The fuel tank is off right now to be cleaned and then I'll get to find out if it can run on gas, Also picked up the other LCA but didn't have time to install it due to messing with the fuel tank.

    ________

Yesterday I put the gas tank back into Barbie Car, then tried to crank her up... darn, forgot that the ignition module is missing. Put the one from Chuck on and it would run off of spray, but still wouldn't run on its own. So I thought maybe injectors were stuck. Fuel pump and pressure already verified to be good. Pulled the injectors and tested one by one with a 9 volt. No clicks on any of them. Pulled a set of B3 injectors and tried them, they all clicked. So I stuck them on the B6 just to see. Fired right up! Sounds super sexy too, even without the exhaust fully hooked up. Got the injectors soaking in the kerosene right now, but just in case, Danny ordered up a spare set from Ebay, plus a couple ignition modules too. All thats left under the hood besides those little items is finishing up the resonator box (had to be modded to clear upper rad hose) hooking up exhaust, and refilling the trans. Will probably get to drive it tomorrow on the B3 injectors, just to see how it does Only thing stopping me from driving it yesterday is one of the back brakes and/or bearings is dragging pretty bad. But there is a new set of brakes and bearings for it sitting in the passenger seat, so no real worries there Paul, it looks like we will be on for a mini meet/festiva relay party to/from Danny's house in the near future

    ________

So, yesterday I hit up the jy, got B6 injectors, ignition module (same for all Festiva, 323, protege, EGT, basically all the B series), a couple of horns, and a handful of grill clips Injectors and ignition module are in, and Barbie Car now runs under her own power with all her own parts. Still gotta close the resonator box back up so she will be able to idle right, but she should be driveable by the end of the day!

    ________

Res box worked Rad all hooked up and seems to be holding water fine, heater core is in good shape, blazing fireballs out of the defrost vents Car's almost done, assuming the rad holds up to pressure, didn't have time to pressure test it today.

    ________

This is with everything in place under the hood except the exhaust heat shield (which is on now) and the other PCV hose.

    No festiva for me ATM...

Yeah, when I said "compilation" I literally meant I would go and pull all my posts about his car and compile them lol. So there it is. Further updates will be in this thread, and any questions, comments, etc, are welcome. I'd love to see more folks doing the 90+ B6s and B8s, they look so clean under there and fit with no smashing

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?
