  • Ms. Scarlet - The D1MS Chronicles

So you've not been officially introduced to Ms. Scarlet? Well, her simplicity is what may have caused many Madness-goers to walk on past without a second glance, and that's why my wife and I love her so much.

    Here she is!

A 1990 L Plus, she has 80,000 miles on the odometer. The interior is in OK shape, and only needs to be reconditioned. The original owner sold the car to her son, who sold the car to me for $500. This was to be my wife's Kimafo Jewel. It had been sitting for two years in the Columbia area of SC, and had dried completely out. To explain this further, that area is known as the Sandhills, and is capable of drying a car out in no time flat. The 5-speed transmission currently has a throw like a semi truck, and so all the bushings will have to be replaced. It's much the same with the rest of the hoses, etc.

When I mentioned FM5, I mentioned her maiden voyage under our ownership. There's nothing like a 1,000 mile road trip to discover what it is that you've gotten your hands into. Ms. Scarlet was my summer project. A fuel pump, tank, fuel line, filter, injectors, distributor, wires, plugs, a battery and connectors, four wheels and tires got the car on the road. I'll spare the journey and simply say that the car gave all it had to give before it stopped in it's parking space for the last time two weeks after Madness.

The whole engine dried out. Any gasket or seal that could give up had done so. So what to do? Rebuild her! We have the technology! The stock B3 will be vatted, rebuilt, and given a home in a much cleaner, more comfortable ride. Why? That's because the car's getting a refurbished interior with memory foam, a new paint job, sound deadening, and an Infinity sound system with a Tang Band subwoofer in the center console. The wheels will be sandblasted and powdercoated in silver. The trim rings are getting chromed, and the center caps will be reconditioned. The addition of a trailer hitch means that the trips aren't going to crowd us with stuff, because the heavily modified HF 40x48 trailer will be built to match the car. That already has its own thread... Pics to come.

            O'Car

I found the perfect head unit for my wife's car. Not a bad price, either.

Called the O'Car, the 55x4w stereo charges and fully integrates with the iPhone, giving you all the apps you could ever want right on your dashboard. Capable of both horizontal and vertical use, the unit makes no mention of its capabilities, and is relatively discreet when the phone is not plugged in.

Bluetooth is integrated as well, and GPS is taken to a new level with the recently released Google 3D maps. Currently, the unit goes for $229. It'll be an excellent addition to the surround of Infinity Reference 4"+1's and Tang Band Subwoofer!
