You need feeler gauges to measure the endgap of the rings in the cylinder before you put them on the pistons, and you need plastigauge to measure bearing (oil) clearances to make sure everything specs out. What brand of rings and bearings did you buy? You will want to get a few bottles of dawn power dissolver to clean the pistons and ring grooves, just break an old ring to scrape it out. Have the block cleaned THOROUGHLY and honed/deglazed before you put fresh rings in glazed over walls. Also a good time to have the block decked if your going to, they can put a flawless surface on it with minimal removal of material. If you already have the parts and you take it apart and put it back together and do all the cleaning it won't cost more than a couple hundred for all the machine work to the block, if that. Make sure they Mic the crankshaft before anything else, or it would be like building a house on a mud foundation. I'm forgetting something...
Anyway, rent autozones piston ring compressor, its blue/purpleish and works great, just make sure the rings slide in the cylinders smooth, do NOT force it.
