  • The TX3 Laser

Ok so this is my new (to me) car. Its a 1990 ford laser tx3 turbo. I believe an escort in the states. These were australian delivered for ford australia built by mazda using the familia gtx/gtr platform. Oh, and it's awd.
Mine has had an engine replacement from a japan gtx and runs from a gtr ecu. I bought it last month or so for $38oo. In top condition are fetching up to $12k.
It needed a lot of love, previous owner/s failed to appreciate what they had and as a consequence let a lot of it deteriorate.
Since purchased she's got new oil (redline) oil filter, coolant (redline water wetter), new plugs, new leads, calipers rotors and pads up front, globes throughout, redline light weight sick proof gear oil for tranny and rear diff.
I also got 2nd and reverse back, removing the CHICKEN WIRE holding the shifter cable in place, and replaced it with a propet clip.
Apologies for pic quality, I promise I'll get some better ones with a real camera..
Ive also pimped it out for work
(I'm a security dog handler) so rear seats and trim are removed, a barrier cage installed, reflectors and amber light on roof added among some other I believe tasteful mods.
anyway here's a couple of crummy pics..
The pic as it was advertised

The front with added "vents" I installed

0.6mm alloy sheet door trim that was destined for the 121 but necessity dictated I replace the mess that was there before. I think it looks sweet.

And as she sits now, complete with mutt in back.

Power isnt bad at all, the oz delivered ones were roughly 115kw. Jap spec were 135. I think (and am only guessing) mine is about 145,150kw? At the crank of course. Boost starts @2.5k and hits full (only 9psi atm) just after 3k. Will power on but waines off a bit at redline (7k). Am getting roughly 340 miles from a tank. This includes highway and "spirited" driving...
Cornering though? Um.. WOW!! Off throttle cornering is pretty darn good, but on throttle? One of the best feelings I cant descibe! I'm waiting on tax time and I'd like to replace all bushes and maybe get some bigger sway bars. But for now is very easily out manoeuvring and rwd I've come across. Even embarrassed an integra the other day at a roundabout

That's a beautiful car, Elusive! I say strap a T25 to it. Those wheels are perfect. Chicken wire FTL.

thanks driverone! Evidently a good upgrade is an ihi vj8 from a subaru, but I'm such a sucker for garrett!!
The wheels came with it they're jap made crimson inc.'s. Club linea's. 17x8+40. I don't mind them, they are fairly light but id loooooove some enkei rpf1's. Black, with a bit lower offset..

Yeah mate bpt. From a gtx familia, was hoping it was the bpd (gtr) but no. still halls *** though!
in saying that I'm having a little trouble under boost when she's cold, I think the fuel pumps on its way out. If I can hide the c/c statement from the wife () I'll replace with bosch 044 or similar soon.

If we had gotten an awd turbo escort in the states it would have made the 5 liter 215hp mustang flagship second best. Emission laws cramped all american vehicles 1970s thru the 1990s
                    1993 GL 5 speed

It's a MazdaFordnKia thing, and you will understand!

we started getting hounded for emissions here too. in the state i live they ended up canning it though. theres only one private workshop equipped to perform the tests and they charged a pretty penny for it too. they ended up getting a back log of 3-4 years or something rediculous like that. the state government ended up (albeit without media attention...) canning it for $$$ reasons
a win for the people i say!

this is my first turbo car and first awd, and apart from the 121 (that STILL isnt finished) i dont think ill look back!
                      boost, traction, nuff said really
