Here is the new/reman torque converters available now through transtar / recon. Sure would like to know what the paint
codes mean. There are no lock up converters available anymore, they say non-lockup or lock-up omitted.
Note that the F4A transmissions can get lock-up with either a high or low stall torque converter. Is this F4A the BF
chassis transmission??

Bert, yes it is unusual to burn so much fuel for a 1300 injected engine, 3 speed auto. And yes it is in 3rd gear @ 2200 or is 2300 rpm
It's now got to get done by workshop with all this new age stuff for checking things.
It runs well though, starts ok, drives well etc.
I'll do process of eliminations over the next few days and see what happens.
Thanks all.

I think you have an air leak or a VAF problem (vane airflow sensor) that is causing the ECU to read funny or not properly. I didn't check back on your tune-up list of posts but a new oxygen sensor sometimes makes a substantial difference. Newer Aspires had 2 of these whereas Festys and early model Aspires only had one.
For sure you'll want to get to the bottom of this and fast.
i would bet that if the TC was swapped out for one WITHOUT lockup, he'd see an immediate 5-8 mpg (similar milage to what i get out of Pepe, my 91 auto around town).Trees aren't kind to me...

I think you are right ^^^ the drive train was designed from the beginning for a manual transmission.
Auto's were a limited add on and re-engineering the whole system for best performance and mileage
was not done..hook it up and make it pass EPA!Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig

Ya gotta be becoming an old duffer (or be a Brit) to still understand volume in Imp. gallons. In the US, the non-electronic 4 speed (designated G4A-HL) was only in the '88-'89 323s, and only available on the hatchbacks and sedans. But not all the hatchbacks and sedans even had it. Quickest visual cues to it being the 4 speed is an "O/D off" button on the floor shifter, and under the hood there is a black front cover on the trans that runs vertical, and a regular oil pan on the bottom. On the 3 speeds, there is just one pan and it its at an angle, same as the festiva trans.
I have a 4 speed auto (which also has lockup) in my basement. Should give the same cruising RPMs on the highway as a 5 speed manual, at least going by the numbers. Biggest issue is that its BIG. Axles should not be a problem, should be able to use the axles from an auto 323. Instead of a vacuum line to the intake manifold, this trans is controlled by a cable that runs to the throttle body. So if you get one from a yard, make sure you get that cable and bracket too.No festiva for me ATM...

Originally posted by Bert View PostBest I could ever get out of the auto was 45 mpg (Imperial) and 2 years ago I actually managed to cross the 50mpg (Imperial) barrier with a 5 speed. Seeing as 3.8 litres (US gallon) as opposed to 4.5 (Imp) differs by about 3/4 litre I think it is safe to reduce my numbers by that percentage. I can retrieve my gas log books if this really interests you. I've kept gas and mileage records for all my vehicles since 1978. Last year I retrofit a 3.00:1 Ford 9" axle into my straight six 86 F150 and also installed a 5 speed OD; speedo read 20% low right after that but the extra gear didn't turn the old girl into a slug. Got 26 mpg out of it on the highway during the summer and this with a tall canopy and roof racks on board. I use a GPS unit to calibrate the speedo and odometer, in case you're wondering.
Or if anyone else can just tell me...please do....from the numbers I am seeing and guessing at...I do not see how it is getting the milage it is."FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"

My auto gets around 27mpg in town. That's also if I'm driving in grandpa launch mode and staying under 50. I did see almost 30 on the way home from ohiostiva, most of the way was 60mph. On a regular day, I'm driving like an idiot and getting mid 20s. Still, that's way better than the 15 mpg I was seeing in the Grand Marquis.-Zack
