  • What kind of fluid for a 5-speed manual?

When the mechanic was putting my new struts on today, he pulled one of the half shafts out and some fluid leaked out. To my surprise, it was gear oil. I was surprised because the Haynes manual I have calls for Mercon trans fluid. Which is correct? If it is Mercon, will it cause any problems if I drain the oil and replace it? Will Royal Purple synthetic tranny fluid be OK?

    Thanks,

The manuals call for Mercon ATF as a replacement, but mine had light gear oil in it when it was new as well. RP is probably OK as well. I used Synchromesh the last time with great results and Redline also makes an "MTL" designed for manual transaxles that call for ATF replacement. It's thin like ATF, but has additives for better gear wear protection and friction modifiers for optimum synchro performance.

Jegs and Summit show Redline Manual Transmission Fluid in 75W85 and 75W90, but I'm guessing this isn't what you're refering to. Will give them a call next week and talk to someone.

Here's their web page. I think the MTL would work good. You could also use their D4 ATF if you want to stay with an ATF...it would still provide better shifting and gear protection. I was actually thinking of the D4.

You don't have to pull the axles out of the trans to change struts you know.

Well, that being said. Why was it pulled out?
