  • 1990 Silverado Build

I wanted to keep a record of this build and most of the Chevy forums are full of idiots and jerks trying to play big on the computer. If this needs to be moved somewhere else would an admin please move it for me.

So this summer after pulling a 68hr work week I am sitting on my couch enjoying my Sunday off when I get a call from a friend needing a tow. His truck blew up while in the hills in southeast Missouri, I will never turn down helping a friend so hop in the truck and head that way. Get there figure the head gaskets are blown (something he has already had done before and doesn't want to go through it again) I through an offer out on the way back with the truck (there was a lot of headaches involved with this, left at 2pm and didn't get home until like 1:30am for a 40mile tow and had to be at work at 6). We ended up settling on $200 cash and a gun I had $75 in but he got to keep the tires he just bought and the battery. I got it home pulled the engine apart and found a piston had come apart, no big deal 350s are dirt cheap. I ended up with a 5.3l this week for $250 from my brother so it is going ls instead. I sold the block and rods and pistons to a buddy for $60 so he can build a coffee table, bringing my total investment into the truck itself at $215 (including gas), I still have 5 aluminum wheels to sell, all the factory fuel injection, and a few other things so I should $0 into the rolling shell and maybe make money on it (still debating on selling the trans and getting a 4l80e). Have a harness priced for $125 with everything I need plus some (should be able to get $50-100 for the fuse box I won't be using that comes with it), I will be making my own motor mounts for free using scrap metal from work, reusing most of the exhaust already on the truck, then might do a junkyard fuel pump upgrade, the only thing I haven't figured out is transmissions (to keep the 700r4 I need to come up with a spacer for the flexplate and a setup for the tv cable, but the trans won't handle the power that's planned for the summer).

    Condensed version
    Truck=$200 and $75 gun
    Bad block and pistons=-$60
    Total in truck=$215

    5.3l LS=$250

    To come
    Motor mounts =$0
    Wiring harness=$50-125
Trans adapter=$25-160 (waiting for confirmation that my junkyardd solution will work)
    TV cable adapter=$20-200
    Or
    New transmission=$300-500
Exhaust =$0 (using what I have lying around)
    Fuel pump=$40-160
    Total=$135-$785

Total for truck so far $600-1250 (not counting part I plane on selling which could be anywhere for $250-600 off) so potential investment so far is $0-650) obviously I know the little things will add up too but I have most everything I need that I should be able to put it together without buying to much (total maybe another $20 in electrical stuff and still need a tune but I will find a connection to get a deal on that)

Pictures to come shortly (fixing to eat lunch will do them when I am done)

      Pic 1 is new motor
      Pic 2 is old motor
      Pic 3 is old motor
      Pic 4 is new motor
Pic 5 is recent shot of exterior.

For some reason when I attached these they went out of order and three ended up upside down somehow, they aren't that way on my computer.

Nice. I like the 80s body better, but still nice score.

You could probably make money on it.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

I also have an 86 c30 crew cab long bed srw, and a mid-80s gmc regular cab wrecker. They are technically dads but I do just about all the work on the crew cab and I am the only one that ever drives it, the gmc is 1400miles away waiting for me to have it hauled up here (at 14000lbs I don't have a trailer that can do a trip that long with that weight) to restore. The wrecker used to be my grandpa when he had his towing business and when he retired dad got it from him for his towing business and I would like to restore it and use it myself (not necessarily to start a towing business I want to get a rollback when that time comes)

Well yesterday I had to go pick up a 79 datsun 620 king cab for my brother, on the way through I stopped my dad's work and talked to him. As I was talking I noticed a wiring harness laying in the corner and recognized the chevy computer ends, I asked him what was going on with it. He said he just swapped a new motor into a truck and the junkyard sent the whole harness with, long story short the dealership was going to throw it out so i got the whole wiring harness and a complete intake with injectors off of a 2003 avalanche for FREE! This means I didn't have to buy the harness or computer and since the intake is better than mine I will be able to sell my old intake and injectors to recoup some of the cost of the motor. Since this happened I am now planning on upgrading the trans, should be able to sell my 700r4 for about $300 and I can get a 4l80e for about $150 that needs a rebuild and $200 for a master rebuild kit which would mean roughly $50 into replacing the trans plus the fluids, but it's cheaper than buying the adapter for the old trans which won't last behind the power of the new motor.

Labeled the harness night before last, didn't have time to work on it yesterday, this morning I striped all of the loom/conduit off of it and this afternoon I got the harness mostly done. I have one plug I still haven't figured out exactly what it does and have one wire I am not certain I want to delete yet but all I have left is to replace the ugly bulky fuse box connector with a custom setup and put the whole thing in conduit and tape.

First pic is what I took out and second is what I ended up with (will get pics of it payed out when I do the finishing on it but i was rolling it up as I finished sections to stay organized)

I too belong to some other auto forums simply because it just doesn't seem right to start posting about 47 Merc pickups, 68 Chevy C10s or 86 F150s on this one. If everyone starting doing this there would soon be a lot of clutter on Festiva.com.
Nice to see that you're not a one-track pony though!

If it has a motor I will make it fun, if it doesn't have a motor that just means I haven't gotten to it yet lol. One of my next projects is going to be building my own steam engine I think (already have a few small ones, which I really need to run and have the boiler fixed on my favorite one)

                    THIS IS AWESOME!!!!

Great thread, you know more then I do, Also, that was a smokin deal on that truck. I just bought mine for 600 bucks and I'm planning to do the exact same thing you are.

                    I have some questions:

                    1) whos doing the wiring? are you converting your own harness? I'm very interested on how you do this. Are there any good writeups your following?
                    2) If you swap the 480le in, wont you have to get a custom driveshaft?
                    3) Any modifications to the existing 5.3 liter? which ECU will you be using?

More pictures! Also, there are 305/350 to lsx engine mount conversions which make it bolt in for 50 bucks. Just thought id throw that out there for 50$ cash thats something you just bolt in and not worry about.

                    This one is mine:

I am doing my own harness there are a lot of good sites, if this is your first time doing this type of project get an 02 an older wiring harness from a truck because I have a site saved for step by step process on that harness. I am using an 03 because it was given to me so it's worth the extra time to save the money.

I think I will be ok driveshaft wise but not sure, I need to make some measurements but I know when you go from 4l60 to 4l80 you just swap yokes and since the 700r4 is the same as a 4l60 and the 4l80 is so similar to the turbo 400 which came in the 454ss trucks of the same style I am hoping my driveshaft will work. If not I will be using an aluminum one from a junkyard that I will have shortened. I figure since I am using the factory trans setup with motor mounts everything should be close but I haven't worried to much about this area yet.

As far as mounts go I can get good size scrap metal for free at work and they are just plate style adapter and I have a copy of the pattern needed for the shape to cut and where to drill so it will take me about 35-40minutes and save me $50. If I mess them up somehow which is hard to do I won't be out anything anyways.

I haven't decided on a computer, I have one out of a 1999 camaro that was given to me but if you get a 411 computer out of a truck I have heard they work good are better to tune (faster processing and other tech crap)

Another thing if you don't have vortec 350 you will need to upgrade the factory fuel pump to one that puts out enough pressure (let's just say a 98, it will fit your factory sender and tank size but give you the proper pressure to run the 5.3 injection system). I am looking into an aftermarket pump though because the factory pump won't support the gt45 turbo and 750-800hp this truck will end up with this year (unless something comes up)

Check these sites out. I have decided to do a stand along set up for the motor and transmission and then remove the factory engine harness from the truck and keep the body harness. Gauges are an area to look into due to the style of speedometer sensor they use but not I possible to get around. I am doing the custom fusebox setup but I am doing it with more slots so one fuse doesn't tie so many things together (that way a short in one circuit doesn't cause everything else to go down and make it harder to diagnose)

If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

great and thanks for the websites! thats some great information have lots of reading to do.

Well, keep some good documentation on this website, I've done countless engine swaps from festivas, to hondas, to vw's, etc but nothing american. That's why I'm a bit hesitant! Regardless, I have lots of reading to do . The biggest hurdle for me is the wiring harness but it seems very well documented.

The wiring isn't all that bad just take your time and before you start on your harness I will give you some tips (that I wish I would have known to do the first time) that will make it a little easier.

Also I have seen jesses truck, saw them build it on west coast customs, he swore it was cursed when he had it built. I won't be going to extreme with mine, mine will be the ultimate sport truck gm could have built (instead of the muscle 454ss) back in the 90s. Mine will just have a newer engine and turbos, but everything on the interior and exterior will be either well hidden or factory style parts.
