  • 1988 Festiva Shifting Issues

Just bought a 1988 ford festiva with around 150k on it. It is having an idle problem when i pull in the clutch to shift gears. When i pull in the clutch, the RPMs will rev up for 3 seconds and then fall back down to normal. Only thing I've replaced so far is a fuel pump. It is also burning oil when cold starting. Any help would be great on these issues.

Burning oil on startup could be valve stem seals,

Is your foot on the gas when you hit the clutch?
Check for slow operation of throttle/butterfly valve.

          Welcome to the forum!

+1 on valve stem seals for startup smoke. As to the revving when putting in the clutch, why are you holding it down for 3+ seconds? As a rule of thumb, the foot should not be touching the clutch pedal for more than ~1/2 second, to prevent unnecessary clutch wear.

when i pull it in to change it to neutral and coast, the engine will rev up and then go back down to normal.

When you are parked with the engine running and trans in neutral, when you push the clutch in, does it rev up every time? if so, maybe somehow the throttle cable is being moved in the process.

My 87 has a sticky throttle that is actually probably drag on the throttle linkage . Take your foot and lift the gas pedal the rpm's should drop.

I did a little more investigating this morning, when going slow in first gear say 5-10mph and then i pull in the clutch it wont do it. Yet if im in third and pull it in itll rev up and then come right back down. Just sitting at a stop like in neutral it will not do it. And no it does not do it if im in neutral and pull ni the clutch.

How did you fix your sticky throttle cable?

Did you ever find your problem? I think you need to adjust your cable. It covers it in the Haynes manual. There should be so much play in it, measure it up. I had this somewhat problem after I was randomly messing with the throttle cable
