  • BuFfy the Vampire Sleigher

    So, one thing leads to another and before you know it a silver '87 BF Familia GT-X 4WD 3 door hatch has followed you home. The name, I hear you ask?

    BF ---> Buffy
    Silver ---> 1 of 5 known ways to slay a vampire. And if vampires are anything like strippers, then sleighing one is on the bucketlist.

    But I should probably start a week or so earlier, with that one thing...

    BPD. Apparently. Has the BP2 block markings, but the injectors are black. Garrett GT28R. Imported from Japan in a half cut, then set up for RWD, mated to a miata 5 speed and bolted into a mk1 Cortina.

    Then it was sold before project was complete. The new owner was also building a mk1 Cortina, but he purchased the BPD/5 speed for his other 'spare' mk1 Cortina, which was to be his next project.

    By some weird twist of fate, he then needs some cash to make some progress on his first mk1.

    So that one thing, was a mk1 thing. Or 3 mk1 things, depending on perspective.

    For the sake of disclosure, breaking abusive cycles and building thread progression, there shall be no more reference to mk1 Cortinas. Apparently they were a Ford of Britain thing, whatever that means.

    It seems I have lots of parts and options. Considering RWD build using the miata 5 speed- the tunnel is mostly there, it will need widening a little at the front.... steering rack is almost high enough for the miata 5 speed to fit underneath. There may be manual steering rack options that will assist with that.
    Unable to find any detailed info on any other BF 4WD conversions to RWD. If anyone has info or links to something that may assist, please share!

    :tm:

    You'd probably want to use the miata sub K member to simplify things.
    If you don't mind me asking, what's the point in a RWD BF?

      The Miata gear box isn't much more robust than the GTX box.
      The killer in both cases is not necessarily HP or TQ output. The problem is the BP's destructive harmonic issues. With a 1.56:1 rod ratio, it's a gear shattering beast. Stock weight flywheel, soft durometer engine and trans mounts and a good crank dampener are essential to keeping either of these transmissions alive. Avoid light weight flywheels and crank pulleys. Those are gimmicks that lead to failures.
