  • Weight?

I wasn't sure where to post this. But my question is about how light you could go with one of these cars and still be safe and legal? You know the the hyper miler way of thinking. What is the lightest street legal Festiva thats been recorded? Keep in mind that i'm from Pa.. We have yearly inspections. I'm thinking bare bones caveman ride. Early spring to early fall use only. How much weight could you shed? How light could you get these cars down to?

well, take away the rear seat, passenger seat, rear panels, spare tire accesories, you could shave 100 lbs with that.. as far as being legal, i don't know PA laws..

    see this thread:

-"Hairlipstiva" 1991 GL 5spd (swapped from an auto), rolling on Enkei 14x6 +38 with 195/45/14 Toyo's, Jensen MP5720 CD deck, tach install, LED strip in cluster, down position rear wiper, FMS springs, Gabriel shocks on 4 corners, Acura Integra short shifter
-Escort GT 91 donor car with BP, G5M-R tranny to be dropped in the little guy...
    -Aspire brake swap COMPLETE!

My car was 1680 lbs without the rear seats and rear plastics, figure another 30-40 lbs for the dash and 50 lbs for light weight seats. Beyond that it's all a question of how extreme you want to go. FMS has/had some fiberglass hatches that could save you 30-40 lbs. The rear side windows are 10-15 lbs each, the front side windows are probably 15-20 each, so replacing those with lexan might get you 50-70 lbs. This would make it hellishly noisy in the car and probably increase wind resistance overall. I'm not sure if it would pass inspection, but the fuel tank is at least 30 lbs, and a 5 gal plastic fuel cell is only ~10 lbs. My guesstimate would be 1500-1550 before you start to see diminishing returns on cost and safety, and it wouldn't be a car I'd want to drive on the freeway.

The problem with most of this is that the weight is coming primarily from the back of the car, which pushes the CG forward. For hypermiling this isn't a problem, but for racing it really screws up the balance of the car.

If you want to go really crazy, rip the tranny apart and run a motorcycle engine/transmission to the differential, you could probably save 50 lbs and gain some hp.

Yea. As far as i know all that is required is that you have to have a blower for a defroster and a speedo. the dash i think can be removed along wih the complete heater and air box setup. And i was thinking poly seat and contacting Centerline for 13or 14 in. wheels. I wanna build a light one.

It will be driven on secondary roads only. 55mph max. I think i can sneek Lexan windows through inspection in the rear 3 windows. But the door windows no way! And a fuel cell is a good idea.

Be careful about the legislation on the fuel cell. I'm not sure if you meant relocating it or not, but I do know that relocating it up here in Canada was grounds for a fail in a safety just because that changes the crash dynamics. As far as materials go, you should definitely check your states law.

funny thing is all this weight saving is over / near the rear wheels. These cars already likes to have the rear end snap out on you so removing all this weight is just increasing the chances of you loosing the rear end.

Removing all this weight is good from straight line use, but braking and cornering you are actually slowing your self down.

just an FYI these cars are about 2/3 front heavy. When I corner scaled my car it was 1100 lbs up front and 700 lbs rear(with roll cage and full interior).

Every car I have owned has had a turbo in it, until I bought this latest festiva.. I plan to fix that though.

My car is stripped on the inside. I've got the dash (with no inner parts), a set of racing seats, harness bar and harnesses. I installed carpet last year because the floor was really bad and the girlfriend wouldn't put ANYTHING down without carpet, lol!

No heater core, defrost, etc. Passes inspection without an issue.

car must have defrost function in PA (air must be able to clear the windshield).
