  • Do I stand a chance?

As I'm still working on building my B6, my brother is working on his own project, an '85 F-150 2wd long box. He's assembling a 351W with 9.4:1 CR, Comp XE262H cam, ported '69 heads, headers and an Edelbrock Performer w/600 Holley. He's using a NP 4-speed (3/4T truck) and a 9" rear w/3.50 gears. We estimate about 300hp or 250@wheels. The truck should weigh around 4200Lbs.

I was joking about how funny it would be if my 100hp B6 swap would actually beat his truck. The more I thought about it, the more I think I should be able to give him a good run (or at least a scare). Between traction issues and a slow shifting truck trans, it may be interesting.

    What do you guys think?

I have a feeling he'll beat you, you'll probably still give him a run though

LOL, I know I'll lose, but I wonder by how much. The truck 4 speed is basically a 3 speed with granny low in first. Plus, the shifts are very slow and traction will be non existant with over 400LbFt and P235 tires. I think I can give him a good run for at least 1/8 mile or so. I wonder how far I can get before he runs me down.

If you get a good tire, and learn to launch it, you can get a hole shot on a lot of cars till about 50mph. My b6 dynoed right at 100 to the wheels on the stock trans with 205/50/15s. I've got a launch on many decently quick cars.

If he can get traction, he's got enough power to run in the 14's pretty solid. I may have to use the Mustang, LOL. That, or throw a couple turns in the track! His truck will be pretty nice when he's done. Its pretty clean with minimal rust, but the 302/AOD were toast. I gave him my old '82 F250 to use for parts and make one good truck out of the two. He's using the motor, trans and everything associated to do the 351W/4 speed swap.

I thought about the 50 shot!

He's got the engine together already and is currently doing minor rust repair on the box & cab. He's going to paint it himself and I'm going to put Boss 302 style graphics on it ("L" stripe). Sad to say, but he'll probably have his truck done in the next month or two, and he didn't start until last month. I'm still trying to scrape up money to get my head re-milled and buy a Cometic head gasket. Then, I want to do some other chassis mods to the Festy as well when the engines out. He has a distinct advantage........divorced, no kids, plenty of disposable income and a fully equipped 20X40 heated shop. He's spent more on new shop equipment & tools in the last 3 months than I make in a month. Truthfully, when he gets his truck running, we'll probably tow my Festy to his shop and do the engine swap/chassis work there. I'll take a few days vacation and we'll hide out in the "man cave", turn wrenches and drink beer.

Any idea what turbo the '79-'80 2.3L draw-through turbo was? We have several good ones in storage somewhere. I'm guessing too big for a SOHC B6?
