  • video: first 35 minutes of Chicago Lemons race

We did not have time to wire the camera so we only have this coverage. We finished 33rd because of 5 hours of different repairs, hopefully things will be better next time. At least we have finished again!

edit: "Spoilers (though you should watch the whole video, good action throughout): Radial engine MR2 (5:00), Good open-track battle with #6 E30 (12:30, lasts about 5 minutes), Radial MR2 again (23:40), Por Sport Mustang getting awfully close in traffic (24:00), Stalled radial MR2 (29:15), Gray Poopon Civic getting a little loose (30:30), Insanely loud Crown Vic (32:45)" (c) Eric

#0) Friday: shifter fell through the floor on the test day

#1) Saturday: ball joint popped out of the spindle (sliced a piece of that bold which holds it)
#2) Saturday: cooked inner rear wheel bearing + cracked the inside of the drum + lost all four bolts holding the front engine mount + that ball joint from #1 needed replacement

#3) Sunday: new ball joint popped out of the spindle (sliced a piece of another bold). we hope this is caused by a worn out spindle

What did you use to record the race? I record my races too with a similar mount, etc.

        I use the Hero 2.

Pretty much what I think the death of a Lemons festiva will always be, bearings and suspension parts.

I cannot agree this is a death. Would we be smarted we would change the 20 y.o. bearings before the race, and suspension - I blame it on an unlucky aspire spindle. We will go with kia spindles, they should be a bit less old

5 hours in a Lemons race is death... I'm speaking in terms of being competitive, not the car being toast. Good show though! Watched the whole video and it makes me happy

You are talking about a bunch of guys who do not make living working on cars. 5 hours of repairs means 9.5 hours of wheel to wheel road racing for not so much money, still a great deal for me

Lemons is certainly a good deal for anyone that wants to race!

I think with good quality bearings and suspension components with a good synthetic grease there should be no bearing failures or ball joint problems. Tweak still has the cheap Chinese wheel bearings in the back that were in there when I bought her. I just put new seals in and regreased with a synthetic polymer grease. She spends a lot of time at well over 100mph and has around 2000 track miles on those crappy Chinese bearings. The front bearings are timken and are also lubed with a synthetic polymer grease, but they only have 1400 problem free track miles. These cars can be very reliable track cars.

The previous owner of my racecar did several 10 hour enduros with the Festiva. This is with all festiva spindles/bearings. He always used timken bearings and synthetic grease.

Great video by the way! I love how in a festiva you can make any line on the track a fast line. Makes passing so much easier! Lemons is so funny, I'd be cracking up the whole time with all those wings and fins and indescribably weird contraptions hanging off the cars. What was that big blue cement mixer looking thing on the top of that one car?

That was one of our better drivers driving

Road America, last 15 minutes of the race for us - battery got loose & rear trans mount gave up after 12 hours of harsh curbs. But this happened 40 minutes before the finish, so that was a great race for us! No part runs this time - all the bearings were solid, all but the final failures were tiny & stupid.

Car: 1993 Ford Festiva (Highly modified)Driver: Bill FisherSo this is the final four laps of our race at Road America. The shift starts with about 1 hour lef...
