Racing December 28-30

We are driving in the Season Ender 24 hours of Lemons at the Eagles Canyon Raceway outside of Dallas Texas. The 93 Festiva is loaded on the trailer and we are excited.
I am using Tweaks rear suspension setup, another threads modified front setup, and installed Russians removable Swaybar. We are rocking a protege B8. I will update this thread as we get to and thru tech and dial in our suspension. Latest pick.

The judges had a big problem with my rear down supports. I had them attached to the rear seat support and weld a large plate between it and the shock tower. After much discussion we needed to weld two more tubes in the rear and move the passenger rear mounted battery into the wheel well. For Texas it's quite nippy. The high 39 with a lovely breeze to help pull heat from your body. We finished at 9:00pm and begged for a waiver to have them check off the cage early Saturday. The car looks a little too pretty for Lemons racing. I almost feel guilty punishing Stiv by racing him. The judges bequeathed us with being in the fastest class, 'A Class', rightly so. I have to mention one sick engineering feat, there is a Prius body with a Harley V-twin drive, it still has a cable driven clutch.

It was a crisp Saturday morning as the Festiva made it through Tech. We easily crank over the car at 27 degrees, he knows its raceday. First in, the team's delirious leader goes out on a slick track in a car not tested more than a few passes at autoX. With the additional pieces welded to the body added in Tech, the back end was super tight and unmanageable. After five laps I drive in and remove the rear Swaybar. This was a small amount better and raced on until I absolutely had to Neon before coming into turn 14. A little too hot a I 180'ed the turn and off I go to get my penalty. We next added the 15mm wheel spacers to the rear to try to give the back more grip. Changed drivers. After 45 minutes Roberto loses huge horsepower. We are not getting any combustion in cylinder two. Diagnosed a nonfunctional injector. 13 phone calls later produces an injector for a 91 1.8 SOHC protege. Off we go. Roberto and Travis pulled all the injectors and "cleaned" them in gasoline while watching mud come out of the wrong places.

Roberto gets back on the track with four cylinders combusting. Within 30 minutes he gets a little too wide in turn 11. And that's black flag number two. We get to put a traffic cone on top of the car. Next out its Travis, on his very first lap he takes a spin as well. We have some big problems gripping on the track (drivers could be better, myself included). image.jpg

We needed to get that back end right! The next guy out, Jess volunteered to accept some testing as we adjust. We tried raising and lowering the preload height on the preload spring adjusters. I finally put the preload just a bit higher in the rear for extra weight from the added bars at Tech. We next decided to go low on air pressure on our new Azenia 615k. Down to 23 in this cold weather. We changed the fuel filter on Saturday night. The old filter dumped brown liquid upon removal.
A bad day of racing still kicks ass.

Sunday starts early and as I await the nausea and headache to subside from Saturdays mandatory drivers meeting at hooters, we are ready to dance. We actually have the mikes working and the Festiva seems ready to give it another go. Gently I push, fearing failure and infamy, the tires warm up a bit and the corners seem straighter and smoother, and the engine pulls strong past 5000rpms. Finally, we have a racer. Watching from the warm windows you could hear people say "hey the Festiva passing people! Woohoo!"

The course at Eagles Canyon Raceway has several elevations to add challenges to the turns. The used the bypass path to make it shorter due to low turnout for the chilly Season Ender. In two places we would catch air as the car hopped into the turn.

Roberto's turn. After hearing my excitement he could wait to race in the cold. One hour in he pulls off the track. "The car is cutting out on certain turns!" We surmise that we got a fuel delivery issue from the symptoms and need to keep the tank topped off for the pump to most easily supply the magic liquid. Travis's turn to drive. We strap him in and chide him about his One and Done lap on Saturday. We receive or obligatory "F@ck you guys!" He is ready to play.
