Yep. While I enjoy railing against gov't regs, I think the tendency of most of the public to prefer "keeping up with the Jones's" and moving to bigger, fancier vehicles had more to do with what the car makers did.
Then again, ad campaigns are designed to increase desire, so to speak. To make consumers want more, bigger, better, and more expensive.
Who knows exactly how much is due to what factors?
Back in 1984, I made it very clear to all the Dodge dealers in Franklin County that I only wanted a new Omni with the 5 speed, the heavy duty suspension and the 110 hp Shelby engine--and they made it very clear that they would only sell me the "GLH Package," including the very important "chrome tipped exhaust."
So I bought an '81 Civic!
