The next big jump in festiva prices will come when gas stations start putting out the "out of gas" signs. Fix up your festy and hold on to it. Its a good investment.sigpic

I would suggest that all us Festy owners:
a: put a locking gas cap on our cars (even though the gas door locks)
b: put a kill switch on your ignition.
because of this article, Festiva's may be on the radar for thefts. With my kill switch, nobody can take it unless they have a tow truck.

that picture of an 89 Metro LSI was taken right in my back yard. They used the pic from the MPR segment, but write-up from some other story. I was drinking coffee this morning, grabbed a discarded USA-Today and about fell out my chair...
The line about "10mpg or your life.." is pure and typical rubbish.
BrentonBecause....45 MPG.

^ Sweet ! The safety line is what sold a Gazillion SUVs. Everyone wanted to be protected from all the other SUVs once the craze set in. I learned defensive driving and kept on going in my festy.sigpic

From the article:
"Experts advise taking the safety trade-off into consideration.
"What is your life worth for that extra 10 miles per gallon?" asks Jon Linkov, managing editor for autos for Consumer Reports."
He can kiss my you know what.
The key phrase is "trade off." A tank-car may be safer, but do you little good if you can't afford to drive it much. Then again, cutting driving time makes you safer still--at least from car accidents. But what if you replace that driving with bicycle commuting? Walking? Walking in the "bad area of town?" Etc.
Many SUVs have taller profiles and are more prone to rollovers. Some will be bigger "crime magnets" either for theft or carjacking.
Again, "trade offs." Everyone has to make choices as to what is important to them. I've always liked little cars and I've never had a minty navy blue 455 H.O. Checker Marathon drop into my lap. So I still "drive small."
I make up for the extra danger by being relatively more careful. I'm not an aggressive driver and I rarely take chances.
If you want to have the rough equivalent of side airbags, wear a good bike helmet to soften those nasty cranium/B-pillar collisions.
