  • $2006 Grassroots Motorsports Festiva

I want a Festiva so bad!

I'm planning on doing the $2006 Challenge with my friend next fall.

I'm a Mazda guy. Festivas are sorta Mazda. I'm a bit lazy with my typing at this hour, so here's what I just posted on the Mazda board

Ideas on how to make a killer $2006 drag/autocross/concours Festiva?
Kinda had a crush on the little things since reading the SHOgun article in Car and Driver what... 14 years ago?

Been thinking about what could be a good fun $2006 Challenge Car. Fondly started remembering the SHOgun from an old Car and Driver story. Some guy took a Ford Festiva (easily among the crappiest cars sold in the US during my lifetime) and stuffed an SHO engine behind the front seats. Rear-wheel drive with huge wheel flares in the back. Like a ghetto version of those amazing Renault hatches sold in Europe. Anyway, supposedly Jay Leno owns two of them. They're supposed to be amazing fun. But what the f*** does Jay Leno not own anyway?

Anyway, not planning on being competitive in the $2006 Challenge. Just thought it would fun to have something unique and hilariously shitty that my friend and I could make decently fast. I think the SHO swap is out of the question with our skill levels.... but with some help, who knows? I think we could easily get a running and mostly intact Festiva for $250, so quite a low baseline.

Anyway.... click Gallery and enjoy some of these babies

    Like the animated gif says:
    Ford Concept
    Mazda Design
    Kia Built

A lot of Mazda stuff supposedly bolts up I think. Could be the ultimo bastard Mazda ****box!
    thanks guys.

We've got Festivas here that would eat a SHOgun for lunch...and I can think of quite a few crappier cars made in the US.. hmmm a Pinto seems to come to mind.. being that the Festiva was designed by Mazda, an Escort GT/Mecury Tracer power plant sounds like it would suit your monitary needs the best..
roughly the same hp as the turbo 323 GT, cheap and plentifull and still bolts up to a Festiva transaxle.. so with the 1000 buck you have left, what will you do then.. turbo?? G25MR trans swap? Hmm I dunno but 200+hp in a 1500lb car may be quite the handfull..

Why do so many people constantly refer to Festivas as "crap" or "shitty". I can provide an entire list of cars that are a lot worse than the Festiva. Of the cars I've owned, my Festivas have been the most reliable.

If you're going to get a car to fix up and put time, effort and money into, why bother getting one you're going to refer to as a piece of shit? If you think it is a substandard vehicle you are not going to put your best effort into it so why bother?

I you are looking for a term of endearment then you should try "Pregnant Rollerskate". Since that term cannot even be uttered without giggling then it could never be taken seriously as a derogatory comment.

the Renault hatchback you speak of is the R5, a really pissed-off LeCar. Street trim was only about 120hp. I think race trim was around 300. Saw one for sale in Canada last year...

they call our little pride and joys "shitboxes" and such because they dont look like camaros or mustangs. i think you gotta be cool to spend a lot on gas every other day. looks like im goin to stay a loser. i like pullin up next to a camaro, fill up, pay for my gas, and leave before hes done pumpin.
