Neighbor accross the street had a friend come over the other day in a honda accord. She was backing out and ran over their yorkie which was on the leash. The leash broke somehow, but managed to get caught around the flex pipe of the exhaust, and riped it all out! I couldn't believe it. Anyway her muffler was lodged under transmission, so i asked if they needed a jack. I jacked up the car for them, and politely asked for the exhaust they was all "destroyed" and not usable anymore. She said go ahead a take it.

This is what i scored!!

Actually the bushings that connect to the hangers were not ripped it seems like the whole system slipped out of the hangers and bent at the front of the catalytic converter, adn then bent and broke off at the flex joint.....weird.

Cat. converters work because they use high $ precious metals and/or transition metals to promote oxidation of various by products of incomplete combustion to more stable and less active species. With the recent explosion of metal pricing the metal content though small, is worth a fair amount of cash!
Older ones are more valuable because they used more metal and more expensive metal than the more recent ones, due to improvements in converter technology.
Someone else may better speak to the actual mechanism(s) as to the functioning of the converter on the various combustion by products

Only the very old ones, Pt was replaced sometime ago with other Pt group elements such as Pa, Rh, Ir, Os, and or Ru. These do not have the "decrative" market demand that Pt does, but are far more expensive than Cu, Zn, or Ni or other industrial metals.

^^very well said. Platinum has reached over 2000 USD per ounce now. Basically any converter from the 80-90's will net 100 a pop on ebay without shipping. John you know where are the platinum is mined from? What river? It's in South America..

BMW has the most expensive cats,most have two worth $220.00 a piece.

No, actually I do not, but not surprised as South Africa has an abundance of natural mineral resources due to geological activity over millions of years.
Think also other major source of these metals is Russia.
So once again the developed world relies upon unstable areas of the world for an important resource, much like oil!
